How we grade them
| 2.8GPANaturalReaderGood | 2.8GPASpeechifyGood | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | CAs a reader, Plus is $9.92 a month billed yearly ($20.90 monthly), a bit under Speechify's Premium. For voiceovers you need Commercial Starter: $16.5 a month billed yearly for 500,000 credits, spent per character at a rate that depends on the voice. Middle of the road both ways. | CPremium is $139 a year or $29 a month, a little dearer than NaturalReader's Plus. For voiceovers you'd want Studio instead: $100 a year with commercial rights, which the listing says buys about 24 hours of voiceover. Fair either way, and pay yearly if you pay at all. |
| Free plan and trial | BGraded as a reader, it's one you can live on: unlimited listening with the free voices, plus 5 minutes a day of the better ones, and no card needed. For voiceovers it's no use, as it's personal use only with no MP3 downloads. | CThe free plan never ends, but it's 10 robotic-sounding voices at up to 1.5x. Natural voices, scanning and the AI tools are Premium, whose trial charges the yearly plan on day 3. Studio's free plan has no commercial rights, so it's no use for voiceovers. |
| Features | BIt reads PDFs, Word files, ePubs, web pages and photographed pages aloud, turns documents into podcast-style episodes and quizzes, and has a Commercial app with Gemini, OpenAI, Azure and ElevenLabs voices and cloning. Both jobs are covered, in separate apps. | B1,000+ natural voices in 60+ languages, up to 5x speed, Scan & Listen, AI summaries, chats and podcasts, voice typing and a voice assistant. As a reader it covers the whole job. Voiceovers and cloning live in Studio and the API, sold separately. |
| Ease of use | B4.55 from 9,134 App Store ratings. Open a document and press play. The only confusing part is that reading and voiceovers are two apps with two subscriptions. | B4.66 from 526,597 App Store ratings, just short of an A. Open a PDF or a web page and press play. Nobody needs a manual for that. |
| Platforms and integrations | BWeb, iPhone, Android, a Chrome extension, and Windows and Mac software. That's every device, but no API or integrations are listed, which keeps it off an A. | AiPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows and the web, Chrome and Edge extensions, imports from Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive, and an API. Wherever you read, it's there. |
| Best for | listening to documents, with voiceovers on the side | listening to anything you'd otherwise read |

Worth knowing
NaturalReader
- Audio from the Free, Plus and Pro plans is for private listening only; publishing it, even for internal training or a nonprofit, needs a Commercial plan.
- Commercial is a separate app and subscription, and its downloads need a paid plan. Commercial subscriptions are non-refundable.
- Paid personal plans cap MP3 conversion at 1 million characters a month, and Commercial credits are spent per character at a rate that varies by voice.
- The desktop software is sold apart from the subscriptions, as one-time licenses of $99.50, $129.50 or $199.50.
Speechify
- The free plan is limited to 10 robotic-sounding voices at up to 1.5x speed; natural voices, scanning and the AI features need Premium.
- Voiceovers for publishing need Speechify Studio, a separate plan: free with 600 credits and no commercial rights, or $100 or $300 a year with commercial rights.
- Studio credits are spent per second: 1 for voiceover, 3 for dubbing and 30 for avatars, so $100 a year buys about 24 hours of voiceover.
- Cloned voices need the voice owner to pass Speechify's verification or a written business agreement; users must be 18, and politicians' and deceased people's voices are barred.
