How we grade them
| 2.2GPAMurfFair | 2.8GPANaturalReaderGood | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | CCreator is $19 a month billed yearly, for 24 hours of voice generation a year with commercial rights. That's around what this category charges. Watch the meter, though: every render uses generation time, edits included, so an hour of finished audio can take more. | CAs a reader, Plus is $9.92 a month billed yearly ($20.90 monthly), a bit under Speechify's Premium. For voiceovers you need Commercial Starter: $16.5 a month billed yearly for 500,000 credits, spent per character at a rate that depends on the voice. Middle of the road both ways. |
| Free plan and trial | CA free trial with 10 minutes of voice generation and 10 of transcription, and its own page says no card is needed. It never runs out, but nothing can be downloaded until you pay, so nothing leaves the studio, commercial or not. | BGraded as a reader, it's one you can live on: unlimited listening with the free voices, plus 5 minutes a day of the better ones, and no card needed. For voiceovers it's no use, as it's personal use only with no MP3 downloads. |
| Features | C200+ voices with emphasis, pronunciation and pace controls, dubbing into 20+ languages, a voice changer, transcription and an API. The gap is cloning: it isn't self-serve, only Enterprise through Murf's team, and broadcasting rights are Enterprise-only too. | BIt reads PDFs, Word files, ePubs, web pages and photographed pages aloud, turns documents into podcast-style episodes and quizzes, and has a Commercial app with Gemini, OpenAI, Azure and ElevenLabs voices and cloning. Both jobs are covered, in separate apps. |
| Ease of use | CNo store rating on record. It's a web studio where you write the script, pick voices and tune each line, with video and music on the same project. Not hard, but there's a bit to learn, and generation time to keep an eye on. | B4.55 from 9,134 App Store ratings. Open a document and press play. The only confusing part is that reading and voiceovers are two apps with two subscriptions. |
| Platforms and integrations | BWeb only, but with add-ons for Canva, Google Slides, PowerPoint, Adobe Captivate and Adobe Audition, plus a pay-as-you-go API. No desktop or phone app, so a B is the top. | BWeb, iPhone, Android, a Chrome extension, and Windows and Mac software. That's every device, but no API or integrations are listed, which keeps it off an A. |
| Best for | voiceovers for training videos and slides | listening to documents, with voiceovers on the side |

Worth knowing
Murf

- Voice cloning is not self-serve: it is available only on Enterprise, through Murf's team. Broadcasting rights are Enterprise-only too.
- The API is billed separately by usage: $0.01 per 1,000 characters with Falcon and $0.03 with Gen2, after $10 of free credit.
- Voice generation time is used every time audio is rendered, edits included; unused monthly time carries forward to the next month.
NaturalReader
- Audio from the Free, Plus and Pro plans is for private listening only; publishing it, even for internal training or a nonprofit, needs a Commercial plan.
- Commercial is a separate app and subscription, and its downloads need a paid plan. Commercial subscriptions are non-refundable.
- Paid personal plans cap MP3 conversion at 1 million characters a month, and Commercial credits are spent per character at a rate that varies by voice.
