How we grade them
| 3.4GPAOpen SunsamaVery good | 3.4GPAWill Be DoneVery good | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | AFree of charge for personal, educational and non-profit use under its license. For-profit companies need an enterprise license, asked for by email, and no price for that is published. | AFree right now. Cloud sync costs nothing during the alpha, and the site says it'll be $3 a month afterwards, still far below the $8 or so planners usually start at. Self-hosting is free, and the site says it will never have a paid tier. |
| Free plan and trial | AFor your own planning it's simply free, with no paid tier holding features back. You can use the hosted app or run it on your own server. The site lists no price for the hosted app. | AThe cloud is free during the alpha with every feature and no usage limits, and anyone who registers now gets 3 more months free after the paid release. Self-hosting stays free either way. |
| Features | BA board with a column per day, drag-and-drop time blocking, Google, Outlook and iCloud events alongside, a focus timer that logs real time against your estimate, rollover and repeating tasks. But auto-scheduling, team workspaces and task-app integrations are still on the roadmap. | BA weekly timeline, a kanban board for each project, a stash for tasks with no day, Vim-style keys, offline use and importers for Todoist and TickTick. Good bones. But tasks can't be given a time of day, there's no sharing, and end-to-end encryption isn't implemented. |
| Ease of use | BWe have no App Store rating on record for it, so a B is as high as we go. There's a hosted app at opensunsama.com, so Docker is only for people who choose to self-host. Self-hosters work through the web app, as the desktop apps only connect to the hosted one. | BNo App Store rating on record, so a B is our ceiling. The hosted cloud means you don't have to run a server, and on desktop a global shortcut adds a task from any app. It is alpha software, though, and Vim keys aren't everyone's idea of friendly. |
| Platforms and integrations | BWeb, Mac, Windows and Linux, with calendar sync, a REST API and an MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. But there's no native phone app yet, so on a phone it's a mobile web app. | BWeb, Mac, Windows and Linux, with a documented HTTP API. There are no app store builds yet, so on a phone it's an installable web app. No integrations are listed. |
| Best for | Sunsama-style planning you can host yourself | self-hosters who plan a week at a time |

Worth knowing
Open Sunsama
- The license is non-commercial: personal, educational and non-profit use is free, and for-profit companies need an enterprise license with no public price.
- There is no native phone app yet; on a phone it runs as a mobile web app in the browser.
- The desktop apps connect only to opensunsama.com, so a self-hosted install is used through the web app.
- Team workspaces, auto-scheduling and integrations with Linear, GitHub, Jira and Notion are unchecked roadmap items, not shipped features.
Will Be Done
- The cloud is free only during the alpha. The site says it will then cost $3 per month, with 3 free months for people who registered during the alpha.
- Tasks are scheduled to days, not times of day, and the FAQ says time-of-day scheduling is not planned for now.
- It is a single-user planner: the FAQ says shared projects and multi-user spaces are not planned for now.
- Phones use an installable web app (PWA) because there are no app store builds yet, and end-to-end encryption is not implemented.
Key features
Open Sunsama
- Kanban board of days
- Tasks sit on a board with a column per day and a backlog. Each task can carry a P0 to P3 priority, a time estimate, subtasks, rich-text notes and attachments.
- Drag-and-drop time blocking
- Dragging a task onto the calendar creates a block linked to that task, and resizing the block sets its length. The calendar has day, 3-day, week and month views.
- Calendar sync
- Events from Google Calendar, Outlook and iCloud appear next to tasks and time blocks, so a day is planned around existing meetings.
- Focus mode and rollover
- Focus mode shows one task with a timer and records actual time against the estimate. Unfinished tasks roll over to the next day, and recurring tasks repeat on their own.
- MCP server for AI agents
- A hosted MCP server with 24 tools lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients read the schedule and create or move tasks and time blocks after an OAuth sign-in.
- REST API and self-hosting
- A REST API with scoped API keys covers tasks, time blocks and ideas. The app can be run on your own server with Docker Compose, which starts PostgreSQL, Redis, the API and the web app.
Will Be Done
- Weekly timeline
- Each day of the week is a column holding an ordered list of tasks. Tasks are dragged between days, and unfinished ones keep their day with a yellow marker instead of rolling into today.
- Local-first sync
- Every device holds a complete local database, so reading, creating and moving tasks works with no network. Changes sync through the cloud or a self-hosted server once a connection returns.
- Vim-style keyboard control
- Vim keybindings cover navigation, task creation, completion and moving work to another day. The desktop apps add a global shortcut that opens a quick-add window from any app.
- Project kanban boards
- Each project has a kanban board with columns you define, and separate spaces keep work and personal projects apart. A stash holds tasks that have no day yet.
- Self-hosting with Docker
- The server runs as one Docker container with SQLite storage and no external services. The web app, desktop app, sync server and API are licensed under AGPL-3.0.
- HTTP API and importers
- A documented HTTP API with bearer tokens reaches spaces, projects, tasks, checklists and schedules. Tasks can be imported from Todoist with an API token or from a TickTick CSV export.
