Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 13 of the 19 other business phone systems we grade

CallHippo is a cloud phone system that gives each user a business number for calls, texts and voicemail across web, desktop, mobile and a Chrome extension. Its plans are priced by the region whose calls they include; the US and Canada plans include unlimited minutes to standard numbers there. A separate Pro Suite for high call volumes adds power and parallel dialers.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about CallHippo, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Who CallHippo is for

  • Great if each person wants their business number on desktop, phone and browser
  • Handy when you mostly call one region, since plans are priced by calling region
  • Good for sales teams that may add power or parallel dialing later

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you dial with a tool, as the US and Canada minutes cover manual dialing only
  • Pricey if you want call summaries and single sign-on, which need Ultimate at $42
  • Not for you if you want call recording on the cheapest paid plan, as it starts on Professional

Good to know

Good for

  • Small teams that want a number per user on desktop and mobile
  • Businesses calling mostly within the US and Canada
  • Sales teams that may later need power or parallel dialing

Worth knowing

  • Prices change with the calling region picked on the pricing page; the US and Canada minutes are a team pool for manual dialing to standard numbers only.
  • US texting needs A2P registration, with a one-time $20 setup fee and monthly charges on top.
  • Call recording, IVR and the main CRM integrations start on Professional; single sign-on needs Ultimate.
  • The AI Voice Agent costs $45 per user a month plus $0.25 a minute, and the high-volume Pro Suite with dialers is priced separately.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace CallHippo you would be making phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.6 is higher than 13 of the 19 other business phone systems we grade. It costs $228 a year.

What you could not

  • Phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network.
  • Texts from a business number, registered with the carriers.
  • Speech turned into text you can trust.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, HubSpot, Salesforce and Pipedrive among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. CallHippo’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
