Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 48 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade
Checkvist is a web-based outliner and task manager designed to be run from the keyboard. Lists nest to any depth and carry due dates, tags, notes and Markdown formatting, and they can be shared privately or published. The free account has no limit on lists or sharing, and the PRO plan adds repeating tasks, task assignment, Google Calendar sync and file storage.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Checkvist, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The free account has no limit on lists or sharing.
- 1
Best for keyboard-only outlines and task lists
Checkvist is an outliner you drive from the keyboard: type dd for a due date, ll to jump between lists, and nest items as deep as you like.
- 2
Paid plans start at $3.25 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $3.9 per person / month, with $39/year shown as the yearly price.
- 3
There is a free plan
Free forever: unlimited hierarchical lists, unlimited sharing and collaboration, tasks by email, Markdown, due dates, tags, import and export, browser extensions and the open API.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web, with a browser extension too.
- 5
Keyboard-driven commands
Actions run from short key combinations, such as dd for a due date or ll for lists, and pressing Shift twice opens a command palette for everything else.
- 6
Endless hierarchy with focus
List items nest without limit. You can expand to a chosen level, focus (hoist) on one branch, sort a list or branch, and filter the list as you type.
- 7
Markdown, notes and links
Items take Markdown formatting, code and tables, with notes, links and backlinks, image previews and file attachments. File storage of 2 GB comes with PRO.
- 8
A 2.6 GPA, above 48 of 123
That is against the other to-do list apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Your call
A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.

The report card
Best for keyboard-only outlines and task lists
Checkvist is an outliner you drive from the keyboard: type dd for a due date, ll to jump between lists, and nest items as deep as you like. The free account has no limit on lists or sharing. But there are no native apps, only a website and a phone web app, repeats and reminders need PRO at $39 a year, and the team plan is still coming soon.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | PRO is $39 a year per person, about $3.25 a month, which is the middle of this category. You can only pay quarterly or yearly, and the pricing page never says which billing its $3.9 monthly figure belongs to. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Free forever with unlimited nested lists, unlimited sharing, due dates, tags, tasks by email and the open API. You could genuinely live on it. The cap you'll feel is repeating tasks and reminders, both PRO. |
| Features | B | It covers the job, with unlimited nesting: hoist one branch, filter as you type, Markdown with tables and backlinks, lists published or embedded, relative dates like +4d. The team plan is still marked coming soon. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record, and the whole thing is built on key combinations, so your first week is spent learning them. Shift twice opens a command palette for the ones you forget, and there's nothing to install. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A web app with Chrome and Firefox clippers, an open API, Zapier and hooks into Slack, Jira, GitHub and Google Calendar. No native desktop or mobile app: phones get an offline-capable web app. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Checkvist is for
- Fits if you'd rather type dd than click a date picker
- Works for outlining projects or research in deeply nested lists you can share by link
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a native phone app, because there's only a web app
- Not for you if keyboard shortcuts aren't your thing, as that's the whole idea here
- Tight if you're staying free and your tasks repeat, since repeats, reminders and calendar sync are PRO
- Watch out: billing is quarterly or yearly only, and the page doesn't say which one its $3.9 monthly figure means
- Too light for teams that need user management, as the PRO team plan is still marked coming soon
Good to know
Good for
- People who would rather not take their hands off the keyboard
- Outlining projects, research notes and checklists in nested lists
- Publishing or sharing a checklist and following its progress
Worth knowing
- There are no native desktop or mobile apps. Phones use an offline-capable progressive web app at m.checkvist.com.
- Repeating tasks, task assignment, Google Calendar sync, due reminders and file storage all need PRO.
- Subscriptions are quarterly or yearly. The pricing page shows $3.9 a month and $39 a year without saying which billing the monthly figure applies to.
- The PRO team plan, with user management and group access rights, is marked as coming soon.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.
You could make the core of Checkvist for yourself: tasks, Markdown, web clipper and linked notes. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. It costs $39 a year.
What you could make
- Tasks, Markdown, web clipper and linked notes: an app builder makes these well.
- It runs in a browser, which is where something home-made would run too.
What you could not
- It plugs into other products, Zapier, Google Calendar and Slack among them, and has an API.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Checkvist’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
