Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 43 of the 51 other docs and wiki tools we grade

Confluence is Atlassian's workspace for team documentation and company knowledge. Content lives in spaces as pages, live docs, whiteboards and databases, and several people can edit a page at the same time. Paid plans add permissions, guest access and Rovo, Atlassian's AI search, chat and agents.

To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Confluence, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for team wikis that sit next to Jira

Confluence is Atlassian's team wiki that plugs straight into Jira, with pages in spaces, live co-editing, whiteboards and databases.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $6.70 a month for each person

As its pricing page puts it: $6.70 per user / month, billed monthly (first 100 users).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Free plan for up to 10 users: pages, spaces, databases and templates, 2 GB of file storage, 3 active whiteboards per user and 50 automation steps a month. No space or page permission settings.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Pages and spaces

Pages hold project plans, meeting notes and policies, and are grouped into spaces with a page tree. Several people can edit at once, with inline and page comments and version history.

  6. 6

    Whiteboards

Freeform canvases for brainstorming and diagrams, with built-in links to Jira. Free allows 3 active whiteboards per user, Standard 10, and Premium and Enterprise have no limit.

  7. 7

    Databases

Structured collections that gather information from Jira and other apps and can be laid out as tables, cards or boards.

  8. 8

    Refunds: 30 days

Atlassian gives you 30 days to undo a first purchase, which is a real window and more than many write down. It is a B rather than an A because the refund covers only that first purchase: Atlassian's own page says renewals and upgrades cannot be refunded at all, and you have to ask rather than click.

  9. 9

    A 3.0 GPA, above 43 of 51

That is against the other docs and wiki tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  10. 10

    Keep it

The plain part of Confluence you could make: wiki, documents and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 8 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card

Best for team wikis that sit next to Jira

Confluence is Atlassian's team wiki that plugs straight into Jira, with pages in spaces, live co-editing, whiteboards and databases. The free plan stops at 10 users and 2 GB with no page permissions, the pricing page's first figures are averages for 300 users, and enforced SSO needs a separate Atlassian Guard subscription. There's no desktop app, and the self-managed Data Center edition goes read-only on March 28, 2029.

ToolGPA report cardConfluenceGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCStandard is $6.70 a user a month for the first 100 users and Premium $13.20, mid-pack in a category whose cheapest quarter starts at $6.30. Read the pricing page carefully: the $5.42 it shows first is an average for 300 users. Enforced SSO costs more again, via a separate Atlassian Guard subscription.
Free plan and trialBFree for up to 10 users with pages, spaces, databases and templates, and a team that size could really stay there. The walls are 2 GB of storage, 3 active whiteboards each, 50 automation steps a month and no page permissions at all.
FeaturesAPages in spaces with a page tree, several people editing at once, comments and version history, and then the parts most rivals don't have in the same product: whiteboards that link to Jira issues, databases laid out as tables, cards or boards, rule-based automation and Rovo AI search and chat on the paid plans.
Ease of useB4.64 from about 3,700 App Store ratings, just under our A line. You sign up and it's there, Standard and Premium have a 7-day trial that asks for no payment details, and templates mean you rarely start a page from nothing.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone and Android, with Jira, Jira Service Management, Trello, Loom, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, GitHub and Figma wired in. There's no desktop app on record, so at a computer it's a browser tab, and the self-managed Data Center edition reaches end of life on 28 March 2029.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Confluence is for

  • Fits if your team runs Jira and wants its docs linked to its issues
  • Works for a team of up to 10 that can live with 2 GB and no page permissions, for free

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free: 10 users, 2 GB, 3 active whiteboards each, 50 automation steps a month and no page permissions
  • Pricey if you need enforced SSO or SCIM, because that takes a separate Atlassian Guard subscription
  • Watch out: the $5.42 the pricing page shows first is a 300-user average; your first 100 users pay $6.70 each
  • Not for you if you want to host it yourself, since Data Center reaches end of life on March 28, 2029
  • Skip it if you want a desktop app, as it's web, iPhone and Android only

Good to know

Good for

  • Teams that run Jira and want documentation linked to their issues
  • Company wikis and intranets organized into spaces per team or project
  • Small teams: the Free plan covers up to 10 users

Worth knowing

  • The Free plan stops at 10 users and 2 GB of storage and has no space or page permission settings.
  • The pricing page's default prices ($5.42 Standard, $10.44 Premium) are per-user averages for a 300-user team; the first 100 users cost $6.70 or $13.20 each.
  • Enforced SSO and SCIM need a separate Atlassian Guard Standard subscription on every plan except Enterprise, which is sold on annual contracts only.
  • The self-managed Data Center edition reaches end of life on March 28, 2029, when its subscriptions expire and it becomes read-only.

Part 02 · Tips

Insider tips

What most people miss: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches

6

Things most people miss, each from its own help pages

The things about Confluence that are easy to miss until they cost you: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches at renewal or when you leave. Each one is from Confluence’s own pages, linked beside it.

Read on Oct 17, 2026. Read from Atlassian's Confluence Cloud support pages, its billing guides and its admin docs on 17 October 2026. Not tried out: these tips are what its own pages say.

  1. 1

    Shortcut

Press Shift+? for shortcuts, E to edit and Ctrl+Enter to publish

While editing, Ctrl+/ (Cmd+/ on a Mac) shows the list instead. Ctrl+Shift+Enter publishes with a note about what changed, and markdown works as you type, so # and a space makes a heading.

    support.atlassian.com
  2. 2

    Pay less

Remove leavers before you add new people

Monthly Confluence bills are based on the most users you had at any point in the billing period, and removing someone mid-period earns no credit. Their seat can go to someone else, though, which is why Atlassian suggests removing inactive users before adding new ones.

    support.atlassian.com
  3. 3

    Easy to miss

Back up the whole site, attachments and all, from Backup manager

In Confluence administration, go to Settings > Data management > Backup manager and choose Create backup for cloud, ticking Backup attachments. Only one backup is kept, so a new one overwrites the last, and the download link lasts 14 days.

    support.atlassian.com
  4. 4

    Privacy

Block Rovo for Confluence if you don't want AI on your pages

Atlassian's admin guide says everyone in your organization gets Rovo on Standard, Premium and Enterprise. An org admin can block it in Atlassian Administration > AI and Rovo > Access > Add app. That turns off its AI for Confluence, but anything Rovo already wrote stays.

    support.atlassian.com
  5. 5

    Leaving

Dropping to Free freezes your page permissions as they are

Existing space permissions and page restrictions carry over to Free but can't be changed there. Anonymous access stops, new spaces open to everyone, and lifting a page's restrictions can't be undone unless you go back to a paid plan.

    support.atlassian.com
  6. 6

    Leaving

After cancelling you get 15 days, then 60, to change your mind

Once the paid period ends the site stays open 15 more days, then it's deactivated and the data is kept for 60 days. Reactivate within that and it all comes back; after it, it's gone. Free sites also get shut down after a long spell without anyone logging in.

Part 05 · Standing

Where it stands

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

43/51

Other docs and wiki tools it is graded above

Confluence's GPA of 3.0 is higher than 43 of the 51 other docs and wiki tools we grade, and level with 3.

It stands best on features (A, above 48 of 51) and worst on value for money (C, above 10).

Its paid plans start at $6.70 a month for each person, against a middle price of $16.50 for the category: 12 of the 41 others that charge start lower.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 3.3 out of 4. Nothing scores higher for less, though at least one tool matches that score at a lower price.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Confluence you could make: wiki, documents and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 8 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 43 of the 51 other docs and wiki tools we grade. It costs $80.40 a year.

What you could make

  • Wiki, documents and templates: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • An endless canvas that stays smooth with hundreds of things on it.
  • Databases with views, filters and links between them.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • Several people working in it at the same moment.
  • It plugs into other products, Jira, Jira Service Management and Trello among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.
  • The depth: we grade its features A, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Confluence’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

What happens once you have paid: whether you can get your money back, how to leave, and how to reach a person when something goes wrong. Each is graded from Confluence’s own terms and help pages.

Refunds and cancelling

BGrade

Good · checked Oct 18, 2026

Atlassian gives you 30 days to undo a first purchase, which is a real window and more than many write down. It is a B rather than an A because the refund covers only that first purchase: Atlassian's own page says renewals and upgrades cannot be refunded at all, and you have to ask rather than click. Cancelling itself is clean, done by a billing admin in the Atlassian admin console.

Refund window
30 days
How you cancel
Yourself, in settings
Getting your money back

Atlassian's refund page says you can request a refund if it is your initial purchase of the app and you ask within 30 days of buying, and that no refund can be offered after that. A monthly cloud subscription is refundable only within the first paid month after the trial, a new annual one only within 30 days of purchase. Renewals, upgrades and usage-based charges cannot be refunded.

Stated on support.atlassian.com
How to cancel Confluence

A subscription is ended by deactivating it in the Atlassian admin console's billing section, which billing admins, organization admins and site administrators can do. On the older billing experience the same thing is done from the my.atlassian.com account page. Deactivating mid-cycle is scheduled for the end of the current billing cycle, and Enterprise plans are handled by writing to Atlassian instead.

  1. Sign in to the Atlassian admin console's billing section and pick the billing account if there is more than one
  2. Select Subscriptions and find the Confluence subscription
  3. Select Manage on that subscription
  4. Open more actions and select Deactivate
  5. Review the cancellation and confirm it
Stated on support.atlassian.com
What you keep afterwards

Atlassian says a deactivated subscription stops renewing and the site stays reachable for 15 days after the subscription period ends, when the site is deactivated and the product data is kept for a period that varies by plan. A Free plan is deactivated straight away, and deactivating during a trial ends the trial. You can ask for personal data to be deleted at once.

Stated on support.atlassian.com
Renewals

The Atlassian cloud terms say a subscription term renews automatically at the rates current at the time, for a term matching the last one, or twelve months where the last was a year or more. Either side can decline to renew by giving notice before the term ends, through account settings, by contacting support or otherwise. No notice period and no renewal reminder are stated.

Stated on atlassian.com

In your favour

  • Thirty days to undo a first purchase, monthly or annual, which Atlassian puts in writing.
  • A billing or site admin deactivates the subscription in the admin console, with nobody to call.
  • Your site stays reachable for 15 days after the period ends, so there is room to get data out.
  • No notice period: declining to renew before the term ends is enough.

Watch out for

  • Renewals and upgrades cannot be refunded at all, so the 30 days really are a first-purchase offer.
  • You have to ask for the refund; there is no button that returns the money.
  • Deactivate mid-cycle and nothing is credited: it simply takes effect at the end of the cycle.
  • How long data is kept after the site is deactivated depends on the plan, which the page does not spell out.

Customer support

BGrade

Good · checked Oct 18, 2026

Atlassian is unusually open about what support costs and what it buys: raise a ticket on Standard and the published target is a first reply in two business hours when the app is down, three business days for a how-to question. Premium gets round-the-clock cover for the worst problems. It stops short of an A because there is no live chat anywhere, the phone number is Enterprise-only, and a Free Confluence site gets the forum and the docs rather than a queue.

Ways to get help

  • Phone

A dedicated phone number comes with Enterprise, alongside a dedicated senior support team. The same comparison marks phone support as not available on Standard or Premium.

    Stated on confluence.atlassian.com
  • Contact form or ticket

A support request raised with Atlassian's cloud support team. The support offerings page says the people entitled to raise one are the product and site admins of Standard, Premium and Enterprise sites, with organization admins added on Premium and Enterprise.

    Stated on confluence.atlassian.com
  • Help centre

Confluence Cloud documentation on Atlassian Support, readable without signing in, covering pages and spaces, administration, permissions, billing and deactivating a subscription.

    Stated on support.atlassian.com
  • Community or forum

The Atlassian Community's Confluence questions board, a public forum where users and Atlassian staff answer questions. The pricing page gives this as the support that comes with the Free plan.

    Stated on community.atlassian.com

Not listed on Confluence’s pages: live chat.

When people answer

The support offerings page states technical support hours of 9 hours a day, Monday to Friday, on Standard. Premium is round the clock for an application-down issue, 24/5 for serious degradation and 9 hours Monday to Friday below that. Enterprise is round the clock for all technical issues. The Confluence pricing page words the same thing as 9/5 regional support and 24/7 support for critical issues.

Stated on confluence.atlassian.com
How fast it says it replies

Atlassian publishes initial response targets by severity. Standard aims at 2 business hours for an application down, 6 business hours for serious degradation, 1 business day for moderate impact, 2 business days for low impact and 3 business days for how-to questions. Premium aims at 1 hour for an application down, Enterprise at 30 minutes.

Stated on confluence.atlassian.com
What depends on your plan

The Confluence pricing page gives Atlassian Community support on Free, 9/5 regional support on Standard, and 24/7 support for critical issues on Premium with a stated 1-hour response from a dedicated team. Enterprise adds a dedicated senior team and a phone number. Support is bundled with the paid licence rather than sold separately.

Stated on atlassian.com

In your favour

  • Atlassian publishes first-reply targets by severity, which almost nobody in this category does.
  • Premium buys round-the-clock cover when Confluence is down, not just office hours.
  • The documentation and the community forum are open to everyone, free sites included.
  • Support comes with the paid licence rather than as an extra line on the bill.

Watch out for

  • A Free site gets the forum and the docs: no ticket, no person.
  • Only product and site admins may raise a request, so everyone else goes through one of them.
  • There is no live chat on any plan, and the phone number is Enterprise only.
  • On Standard a how-to question has a three-business-day target, which is a long wait for a small question.

What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Atlassian's pages on requesting a refund and on deactivating a subscription, its cloud licensing FAQ, the Atlassian cloud terms of service, the support offerings comparison, the Confluence pricing page, the Confluence Cloud documentation and the Atlassian Community. These are Atlassian's account-wide rules rather than a Confluence policy. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted its support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.
