Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 8 of the 43 other habit trackers we grade

Forfeit is a habit-contract app from Forfeit Inc. in San Francisco. You set a task, a deadline and a consequence for missing it, usually a charge to your card, then prove you did it with a photo, video, GPS check-in, health data or screen-time data that AI or a staff member reviews. Its AI coach, Overlord, chats with you, sends reminders and can block apps or apply the penalties your own rules allow.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Forfeit, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Setting up a goal is real work too: a task, a deadline, a stake, a kind of evidence and your own appeal rules, which lock once it's running.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for putting real money on the line for a habit

Penalties come on top, plan contents aren't published, and the FAQ says forfeited money is currently kept by Forfeit.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $5 a month when paid by the year

As its pricing page puts it: $3.99 per week or $59.99 per year for Premium (US App Store); $10.99 per month on the web.

  3. 3

    You can try it first

7-day free trial on eligible web signups; the Stripe checkout confirms whether it applies.

  4. 4

    It runs on 4 platforms

    Web, macOS, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Habit contracts with a stake

Each goal has a task, a deadline and an amount of money. Stripe pre-authorizes the stake, and a missed deadline captures it. Goals can repeat on set days or a number of days a week.

  6. 6

    Other consequences

Instead of money, a miss can text, call or email a contact you chose, block apps on your phone or Mac, or lock your Mac screen.

  7. 7

    Evidence and verification

Goals are proven by photo, video, timelapse, GPS check-in, Apple Health or Health Connect data, Screen Time or Mac activity. AI or a person on the team reviews evidence before a charge.

  8. 8

    A 2.4 GPA, above 8 of 43

That is against the other habit trackers we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card

Best for putting real money on the line for a habit

Forfeit is for people who only follow through when it costs them: you set a task, a deadline and a stake, prove you did it with a photo, GPS or health data, and a missed deadline charges your card. There's nothing free, the trial takes your card first, and at $10.99 a month on the web it's the dearest tracker here. Penalties come on top, plan contents aren't published, and the FAQ says forfeited money is currently kept by Forfeit.

ToolGPA report cardForfeitGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDThe web signup is $10.99 a month where this category's middle is $3.33, and the App Store's weekly billing at $3.99 works out at $17.29 a month. Penalties are charged on top of all that, and the vendor doesn't publish what Premium or Pro actually include, so you're paying without a list.
Free plan and trialDNothing free at all. The web signup offers a 7-day trial through Stripe, so your card goes in first, and then it's $10.99 a month. A 2025 App Store review says you can't even set a goal without a subscription.
FeaturesAEvidence by photo, video, timelapse, GPS, health or screen-time data, reviewed by AI or a person; appeals answered within 12 hours under rules you wrote yourself; misses that text, call or email a friend, block apps or lock your Mac; and an AI coach that will phone you.
Ease of useB4.76 on the App Store, but from only 358 ratings, so it misses the 1,000 an A needs on our ladder. Setting up a goal is real work too: a task, a deadline, a stake, a kind of evidence and your own appeal rules, which lock once it's running.
Platforms and integrationsBiPhone, Android, Mac and the web, and it pulls data from Apple Health, Health Connect, Strava, Whoop, MyFitnessPal, RescueTime, IFTTT and Plaid. But the FAQ says the Mac app only does blocking and the web app is mainly for the AI coach, so the real product is on your phone.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Forfeit is for

  • Fits if you only follow through when money or your reputation is on the line
  • Works for habits that can be proven with a photo, GPS, health or screen-time data

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want anything free, as there's no free plan and the card-first trial leads into $10.99 a month
  • Pricey if you slip often, because penalties are charged on top of the subscription
  • Not for you if you mind where the money goes, since the FAQ says Forfeit currently keeps it
  • Watch out: what Premium and Pro include isn't published, and the web price differs from the App Store's $3.99 weekly and $59.99 yearly
  • Watch out: the Mac app only blocks apps and the web app is mainly for the AI coach, so the real product is on your phone

Good to know

Good for

  • People who follow through only when money or reputation is at stake
  • Habits that can be proven with a photo, GPS, health or screen-time data
  • Blocking distracting apps under rules an AI coach enforces

Worth knowing

  • No free plan is published: the web signup offers a 7-day trial, then $10.99 a month, and a 2025 App Store review says no goal can be set without a subscription.
  • Penalties are charged on top of the subscription, and the FAQ says forfeited money is currently kept by Forfeit.
  • The vendor does not publish what Premium and Pro each include, and the web price differs from the App Store amounts.
  • The FAQ limits the Mac app to Mac blocking and says the web app is mainly for Overlord, the AI coach.

Part 03 · Features

What it does

Its main features, where it runs, what it works with and who makes it

4

Places it runs: Web, macOS, iOS and Android

Habit contracts that charge your card when you miss a goal. Here is what it does, as its own site describes it, and what it covers: AI features, site & app blocker, Pomodoro timer, habit tracking, goals.

But the FAQ says the Mac app only does blocking and the web app is mainly for the AI coach, so the real product is on your phone.
From our grade for platforms and integrations
Habit contracts with a stake
Each goal has a task, a deadline and an amount of money. Stripe pre-authorizes the stake, and a missed deadline captures it. Goals can repeat on set days or a number of days a week.
Other consequences
Instead of money, a miss can text, call or email a contact you chose, block apps on your phone or Mac, or lock your Mac screen.
Evidence and verification
Goals are proven by photo, video, timelapse, GPS check-in, Apple Health or Health Connect data, Screen Time or Mac activity. AI or a person on the team reviews evidence before a charge.
Appeals and leniency
A missed goal can be appealed, and a person reviews each appeal within 12 hours. You write the appeal rules when creating a goal, and they lock once it is running.
Overlord AI coach
Overlord chats around the clock, reminds you before deadlines, can phone you, and grants or refuses temporary unblocks according to the rules you set.
App and website blocking
Blocking uses Apple's Screen Time framework on iOS and a native app on Mac that closes blocked sites and tracks the apps in use. Disconnecting the tracking counts as a failure.

Other habit trackers it is graded above

Forfeit's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 8 of the 43 other habit trackers we grade, and level with 10.

It stands best on features (A, above 41 of 43) and worst on value for money (D, above 0).

Its paid plans start at $5 a month when paid by the year, against a middle price of $2.50 for the category: 23 of the 28 others that charge start lower.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Forfeit you could make: habit tracking, goals and Pomodoro timer. What surrounds it you could not. The 6 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 25 of the 43 other habit trackers grade higher. It costs $59.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Habit tracking, goals and Pomodoro timer: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Blocking that reaches every browser and app and is hard to switch off.
  • Apps for macOS, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Apple Health, Health Connect and Strava among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • People on the other end: coaches. No app builder makes those.
  • The depth: we grade its features A, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Forfeit’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
