Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.2

GPA, above 20 of the 24 other presentation tools we grade

Google Slides is an online presentation app in which several people can edit the same deck at once, with comments, sharing controls and revision history. It is free with a personal Google Account and is also part of every Google Workspace business plan. Slides recording and speaker spotlight are limited to some Workspace plans, and among the Business editions Gemini in Slides starts at Business Standard.

To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Google Slides, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for free decks a whole team edits together

Google Slides is Google's free presentation app: it lives in the browser and on phones, and everyone can edit the same slide at once.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $7 a month for each person

As its pricing page puts it: $7 per user / month with a 1-year commitment (Workspace Business Starter).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Free with a personal Google Account: anyone signed in can create, edit and share presentations. Slides recording and speaker spotlight are available only on Google Workspace plans.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Co-editing and revision history

Several people can work on the same slide at the same time. Sharing settings control who can view, comment or edit, and revision history restores earlier versions.

  6. 6

    Gemini in Slides

Generates new slides and images from a prompt, summarizes a presentation, rewrites text and can draw on files in Drive. It requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan.

  7. 7

    Slides recording

Records a presenter talking through a deck and saves the video to Drive for sharing. Each recording is limited to 30 minutes and can only be made in Chrome or Edge.

  8. 8

    Refunds: no set window

Nobody sells you Slides on its own, so paying for it means buying Google Workspace and living by Google's account-wide billing rules. Two plans, two different answers.

  9. 9

    A 3.2 GPA, above 20 of 24

That is against the other presentation tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  10. 10

    Keep it

The plain part of Google Slides you could make: templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card

Best for free decks a whole team edits together

Google Slides is Google's free presentation app: it lives in the browser and on phones, and everyone can edit the same slide at once. It's the plain one, though: recording and speaker spotlight are kept for some Workspace plans, Gemini starts at $14 a user a month, there's no Windows or Mac desktop app, and reviewers say the iPhone app does a lot less than the web version.

ToolGPA report cardGoogle SlidesGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree for personal use, full stop, where presentation tools here start at $5.83 a month in the lower quarter and $9.99 in the middle. For a business it arrives inside Google Workspace from $7 a user a month on a 1-year commitment, with Gmail, Drive and Meet in the box. Gemini in Slides waits for the $14 plan.
Free plan and trialAA personal Google Account can create, edit, present, co-edit, comment, use templates and work offline, with no deck limit. The only things held back are Slides recording and speaker spotlight, which Google keeps for some Workspace plans.
FeaturesCIt's the plain one: co-editing, comments, revision history and editing PowerPoint files without making a copy. The gaps are on Google's own pages. Recording stops at 30 minutes and works only in Chrome or Edge, and Gemini in Slides needs a Workspace plan.
Ease of useB4.68 from about 413,000 App Store ratings, a whisker under the 4.7 we want for an A. There's nothing to install and nothing to set up if you have a Google Account, and people who make simple decks say it covers what they need.
Platforms and integrationsBAny browser, iPhone, iPad and Android, with Google Meet and Drive wired in and an API for developers. No Windows or Mac desktop app is listed, which is what keeps it off an A, and offline on a computer needs Chrome or Edge with an extension.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Google Slides is for

  • Fits if a few of you need to build and review the same deck at the same time
  • Works for companies already paying for Google Workspace, since it's part of every plan

Who it is not for

  • Not for you if you want to record yourself presenting for free, as recording is kept for some Workspace plans
  • Skip it if you build slides on an iPhone or iPad, as reviewers say the app leaves out much of the web version
  • Pricey if you only want Gemini's help, because that starts on Business Standard at $14 a user a month
  • Watch out: each recording stops at 30 minutes and can only be made in Chrome or Edge
  • Tight if you work offline on a computer, as there's no desktop app and you need Chrome or Edge with an extension

Good to know

Good for

  • Teams that build and review the same deck together in a browser
  • Organizations that already pay for Google Workspace
  • Presenters who share their slides in Google Meet calls

Worth knowing

  • There is no standalone paid Slides plan; the business version comes only as part of Google Workspace, with Gmail, Drive and Meet.
  • Gemini in Slides is not in Business Starter; it starts at Business Standard, $14 per user / month on a 1-year commitment.
  • Slides recording and speaker spotlight are not available with a free personal account; Google limits them to some Workspace plans.
  • Google's help lists Slides for computer browsers, Android, iPhone and iPad; no Windows or Mac desktop app is listed.

What people say

  • 4.7on the App Store, from 413,281 ratings

What they like

  • Commenters who make only simple decks say it covers what they need, and prefer it to heavier desktop presentation software.

What they don’t

  • Reviewers of the iPhone and iPad app say it leaves out much of what the web version does, with background colours, custom colours and working in two decks at once among the gaps.
  • The built-in AI tools draw complaints from commenters, from a slide-tidying button that flattens the slide into an image to an assistant that could only change one slide at a time.
  • Commenters complain that SVG images cannot be brought into a deck directly.

10 App Store reviews of the iPhone and iPad app, seven of them three stars or lower and seven more than three years old, and about 12 Hacker News comments from November 2025 to September 2026

Insider tips

What most people miss: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches

6

Things most people miss, each from its own help pages

The things about Google Slides that are easy to miss until they cost you: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches at renewal or when you leave. Each one is from Google Slides’s own pages, linked beside it.

Read on Oct 17, 2026. Read from Google's Docs Editors Help (Slides shortcuts, audience Q&A, offline use, publishing, Office files) and Workspace Admin Help on the free trial on 17 October 2026. Not tried out: these tips are what its own pages say.

  1. 1

    Shortcut

While presenting, press S for notes and B to black out

Ctrl+F5 starts the show. Then S opens your speaker notes, B or full stop goes to black, W or comma to white, L turns on the laser pointer and A opens audience tools. Type a slide number and press Enter to jump there. Ctrl+Shift+C turns on captions, in English only.

    support.google.com
  2. 2

    Easy to miss

Take audience questions from their phones, with upvotes

In Presenter view, open Audience tools and click Start new. A link appears at the top of your slides where people can send questions, anonymously if they like, and vote others up or down. Click Present to put one on screen. Tools → Q&A history keeps past sessions.

    support.google.com
  3. 3

    Setting

Turn on offline before the trip, not on the plane

Switching it on needs a connection. In Drive, go to Settings and turn on Offline, using Chrome or Edge with the Google Docs Offline extension, outside private browsing. Then mark the deck itself with File → Make available offline. Only one account per browser profile can have it on.

    support.google.com
  4. 4

    Privacy

A deck published to the web keeps updating itself

Publish to web makes a public copy, and Google says you can't turn off its automatic updates in Slides, so every later edit shows up within minutes. Mind what you add afterwards. To take it down, go to File → Share → Publish to web → Published content & settings → Stop publishing.

    support.google.com
  5. 5

    Easy to miss

Converting a PowerPoint turns its charts and videos into pictures

Open a .pptx straight in Slides and it gets converted: embedded charts and videos become images, SmartArt becomes Google Drawings and macros are dropped. To keep it a real PowerPoint file, use Office Compatibility Mode, which needs Chrome and the Office Editing extension.

    support.google.com
  6. 6

    Renewal

The Workspace trial becomes a paid plan on its own

Nothing is charged during the 14-day trial, but if your payment details are on file the paid subscription starts by itself when it ends. Add an 11th user and you're asked to end the trial early, with everyone paid for. With no billing set up at the end, the account is suspended.

Google Slides's GPA of 3.2 is higher than 20 of the 24 other presentation tools we grade, and level with 2.

It stands best on free plan and trial (A, above 21 of 24) and worst on features (C, above 2).

Its paid plans start at $7 a month for each person, against a middle price of $8.66 for the category: 6 of the 21 others that charge start lower.

Keep it

The plain part of Google Slides you could make: templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 20 of the 24 other presentation tools we grade. It costs $84 a year.

What you could make

  • Templates: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • A slide editor.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • Several people working in it at the same moment.
  • It plugs into other products, Google Meet, Google Drive and Gemini among them, and has an API.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.

Refunds and cancelling

BGrade

Good · checked Oct 18, 2026

Nobody sells you Slides on its own, so paying for it means buying Google Workspace and living by Google's account-wide billing rules. Two plans, two different answers. The monthly Flexible Plan is fair: stop whenever you like, pay for the days you used, and leftover credit goes back to your card. The cheaper 1-year commitment is the opposite: leave early and you still owe the rest of the term, with nothing refunded. Half a good deal is a B.

Refund window
No set window
How you cancel
Yourself, in settings
Getting your money back

Google's billing help says a Workspace account is prorated and unused credit refunded, and that any credit balance left once everything is cancelled is returned automatically to the payment method on file. On the Annual/Fixed-Term Plan that does not apply: the cancellation page says you are charged the remaining balance of the contract if you cancel before the term ends.

Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com
How to cancel Google Slides

An administrator cancels the whole Workspace subscription in the Google Admin console, under Billing and then Subscriptions, which needs the Billing management privilege. Google tells you to export user data first. Where the billing sits elsewhere the cancelling does too: in Google Play for an Android purchase, in the iPhone Settings app for an Apple one, and with the reseller if you bought through one.

  1. Download anything worth keeping with the Data Export tool before you start
  2. Sign in to the Google Admin console and open Billing, then Subscriptions
  3. Open the subscription, click More, then Cancel Subscription
  4. Give a reason and click Continue to cancel
  5. Work past the alternatives Google offers and click Continue to cancel again
  6. Tick the confirmation box, type your email address and click Cancel My Subscription
Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com
What you keep afterwards

Google's cancellation page warns that users' Workspace data is deleted afterwards and cannot be restored, which is why it tells you to export first. Cancelling does not delete the user accounts or the organisational structure. Keep Cloud Identity and you can still open Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Keep, but shared drive content becomes read-only: viewable, not editable, movable or deletable.

Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com
Renewals

Google says an Annual/Fixed-Term contract renews itself for another year unless you act, and that it notifies you 30 days and again 3 days before the renewal date. Auto-renewal can be switched off in the Admin console, which suspends the service at the end of the term until it is turned back on. A Flexible Plan simply bills monthly until it is cancelled.

Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com

In your favour

  • The monthly Flexible Plan lets you stop whenever you like and pay only for the days you used.
  • Credit left over after you cancel everything goes back to your card without you asking.
  • Google warns you 30 days and again 3 days before a yearly contract renews, which is rare and welcome.
  • The whole thing is cancelled by an admin in the console, with nobody to phone.

Watch out for

  • That $7 Business Starter price buys a 1-year commitment, and leaving early still costs you the rest of it.
  • Mid-term you cannot shed licences on the annual plan either: you pay for every seat until renewal.
  • Workspace data is deleted after cancellation and cannot be restored, so export your decks first.
  • Keep Cloud Identity and shared drive files go read-only: you can look at them and nothing more.

Customer support

AGrade

Excellent · checked Oct 18, 2026

Pay for Workspace and a real person is a few clicks away: the admin opens the console, types Contact support and joins a queue for a live agent, or sends an email case instead. Google states the hours, 24 hours a day in English everywhere it operates, and a target of a first reply within one business day. With a big help centre and a public forum behind that, it is an A. The catch is that all of it belongs to the administrator, and free users get none of it.

Ways to get help

  • Live chat

An administrator clicks Get help in the Admin console, describes the problem, types Contact support and picks Chat, then waits in a queue to be connected to a Google support representative. It needs the Support administrator privilege.

    Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com
  • Email

The same Get help flow offers Email instead of chat, which opens a support case with Google. Like the chat, it is for administrators holding the Support administrator privilege rather than for everyday users.

    Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com
  • Help centre

Slides shares the Google Docs Editors Help Center with Docs, Sheets, Forms and Sites: written articles on building and presenting slides, sharing, offline work and troubleshooting, readable without signing in.

    Stated on support.google.com
  • Community or forum

The Google Docs Editors Community is a public forum where other users and Google product experts answer questions about Slides. Administrators have a separate Workspace Admin community.

    Stated on support.google.com

Not listed on Google Slides’s pages: phone.

When people answer

Google's support languages and hours table lists English support as 24/7 in every country, with many local languages also around the clock. A few are limited to business hours: German in Austria and Dutch and French in Belgium are shown as 9:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday, UTC+1.

Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com
How fast it says it replies

Google says it works through issues by priority level and time of submission, and that you can expect an initial response within 1 business day or less. Four priority levels run from a critical outage hitting several users down to a cosmetic problem. No fix time is promised, since that depends on the issue.

Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com
What depends on your plan

Standard Support is included with every Workspace edition. Enhanced Support, paid on Business Standard and Plus and included with Enterprise, states a one-hour response for the most critical cases and round-the-clock cover for the top two priorities. Premium Support, a paid Enterprise upgrade, states 15 minutes and cover for the top three.

Stated on workspace.google.com

In your favour

  • Live chat with a Google agent comes with every paid edition, not only the dear ones.
  • English support is stated as running 24 hours a day, every day, in every country Google sells in.
  • Google commits to a target of a first reply within one business day or less.
  • The help centre and the public forum are open to free users too, not just paying ones.

Watch out for

  • Only an administrator with the right privilege can open a case, so everyone else goes through them.
  • On a free personal Google Account there is no person to reach at all: articles and the forum only.
  • Google promises a first reply, not a fix, and states no time by which anything is resolved.
  • The one-hour and 15-minute targets are a paid upgrade on Business plans.

What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Google's Workspace admin help on cancelling, refunding remaining credit, renewing an annual contract and comparing the two payment plans, its pages on contacting support and on support hours, the Customer Care page, and the Docs Editors Help Center and community that cover Slides. These are account-wide Workspace rules, not a Slides policy. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.
