How we grade them
| 3.8GPAGoogle SlidesExcellent | 3.4GPAKeynoteVery good | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | AFree for personal use, which is all most people need. For a business it comes inside Google Workspace from $7 a user a month on a 1-year commitment, with Gmail, Drive and Meet. Gemini in Slides waits until the $14 plan. | BThe app costs nothing. The paid part is Apple Creator Studio at $12.99 a month or $129 a year, the dear end for presentations. It bundles Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro and Pixelmator Pro, but for Keynote itself it adds templates, stock media and beta AI tools. |
| Free plan and trial | AA personal Google Account gets you the lot for the basics: create, edit, share, co-edit, comment, templates and offline access. Slides recording and speaker spotlight are held for some Workspace plans. | ACreating, editing, presenting and collaborating in real time are all free, with no subscription. Most people could stay here. Premium templates, the Content Hub and the AI slide tools are the paid bits. |
| Features | BCo-editing, comments, revision history and editing PowerPoint files without making a copy. Solid. But recordings stop at 30 minutes and only work in Chrome or Edge, and commenters complain you can't bring an SVG image straight into a deck. | AApple-designed themes, Magic Move and other animations with a live preview, a presenter display for rehearsing, and remote control from an iPhone or Apple Watch. It opens PowerPoint files and exports to PowerPoint, PDF, HTML and video. |
| Ease of use | A4.7 from about 413,000 App Store ratings. People who only make simple decks say it covers what they need and prefer it to heavier desktop software. | B4.4 from about 83,000 App Store ratings, which is good but not the top band. Every deck starts from a theme, so you swap the placeholder text and pictures for your own. |
| Platforms and integrations | AAny browser, iPhone, iPad and Android, with Google Meet and Drive wired in and an API for developers. No Windows or Mac desktop app is listed, and offline editing on a computer needs Chrome or Edge with an extension. | BMac, iPad, iPhone and Apple Vision Pro, plus a browser version at iCloud.com that Windows collaborators can join. No Android app and no Windows app. Sharing runs through iCloud or Box. |
| Best for | free decks a whole team edits together | good-looking animated decks on Apple devices |

Worth knowing
Google Slides
- There is no standalone paid Slides plan; the business version comes only as part of Google Workspace, with Gmail, Drive and Meet.
- Gemini in Slides is not in Business Starter; it starts at Business Standard, $14 per user / month on a 1-year commitment.
- Slides recording and speaker spotlight are not available with a free personal account; Google limits them to some Workspace plans.
- Google's help lists Slides for computer browsers, Android, iPhone and iPad; no Windows or Mac desktop app is listed.
Keynote
- The apps are for Apple devices only; on a Windows PC, Keynote is available just in a browser through iCloud.com.
- Generating slides from an outline, generated presenter notes and slide clean-up need Apple Creator Studio, at $12.99 per month or $129 per year, and are labeled beta.
- Apple's compatibility list marks PowerPoint WordArt, text effects, image effects and OLE objects as not supported on import; SmartArt is imported as a shape.
Key features
Google Slides
- Co-editing and revision history
- Several people can work on the same slide at the same time. Sharing settings control who can view, comment or edit, and revision history restores earlier versions.
- Gemini in Slides
- Generates new slides and images from a prompt, summarizes a presentation, rewrites text and can draw on files in Drive. It requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan.
- Slides recording
- Records a presenter talking through a deck and saves the video to Drive for sharing. Each recording is limited to 30 minutes and can only be made in Chrome or Edge.
- Presenting in Google Meet
- Slides and Meet controls appear in one place during a call, and speaker spotlight places the presenter's video inside the slide. Both are limited to some Workspace Business and Enterprise plans.
- PowerPoint and Canva files
- PowerPoint presentations can be edited directly without making a copy, or converted to Slides format. Canva presentations can also be imported.
- Offline editing
- Presentations can be opened, created and edited without a connection. On a computer this requires Chrome or Microsoft Edge with the Google Docs Offline extension.
Keynote
- Themes and slide layouts
- Every presentation begins with an Apple-designed theme, a set of slide layouts whose placeholder text and images are replaced with your own. Layouts and backgrounds can be changed slide by slide.
- Animations and Magic Move
- Slide transitions, emphasis builds and Magic Move animate objects within and between slides, with a live preview on the canvas while editing.
- Presenter tools
- A customizable presenter display for rehearsing, remote control from an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch, multi-presenter slideshows, and a separate window for notes and controls during video calls on a Mac.
- Real-time collaboration
- Share a presentation publicly or with specific people through iCloud or Box and see a list of their changes as they happen. Collaborators can also join from a browser on a Mac or Windows computer.
- PowerPoint import and export
- Imports and edits Microsoft PowerPoint files and exports to PowerPoint, PDF, HTML, movies and images. Apple publishes a feature-by-feature list of what carries over from PowerPoint.
- Creator Studio slide tools
- For Apple Creator Studio subscribers, Keynote can turn an outline into a slide deck with presenter notes and correct layout, typography and alignment issues. Apple labels these features beta.
