Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 4 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools we grade

Moxie is business management software for freelancers and small agencies. It combines client records, projects, proposals and contracts, time tracking, invoicing with online payments and basic income and expense tracking, along with a client portal, forms, meeting scheduling and a sales pipeline. Its accounting is light bookkeeping that can hand off to QuickBooks.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Moxie, taken from its own pages and our grades.

There's a fair bit to set up before it pays off: clients, projects, proposal and contract templates, and a bank connection.

The report card

Best for freelancers who want clients and invoices in one app

Moxie runs the business side of freelancing for $10 a month billed yearly: clients, proposals, contracts, time tracking, invoices and a sales pipeline, all on the cheapest plan. That's a lot for the money. Just don't expect real accounting, as it's basic income and expense tracking, and the QuickBooks sync needs Pro.

ToolGPA report cardMoxieGraded Oct 17, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBStarter is $10 a month billed yearly or $12 monthly, inside the cheaper quarter of accounting tools at $15, and it already invoices, tracks time and sends proposals and contracts. Syncing with QuickBooks needs Pro at $20 billed yearly.
Free plan and trialCA 14-day free trial, and the listing doesn't say whether it needs a card. There's no free plan, though Moxie offers scholarships by location or need.
FeaturesCClients, projects, proposals, contracts, time tracking, invoices with card, PayPal or ACH payments, forms, scheduling and a pipeline. As accounting it's basic income and expense tracking, though, and Moxie itself suggests QuickBooks to finish the books.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record. There's a fair bit to set up before it pays off: clients, projects, proposal and contract templates, and a bank connection.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone and Android, where the app is called Hectic, with Stripe, PayPal, Plaid, QuickBooks, Outlook, Zapier and Make. There's no desktop app, which keeps it off an A.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Moxie is for

  • Great if you're a solo freelancer who wants proposals, contracts and invoices in one place
  • Handy when you bill tracked time and expenses back to clients
  • Good for small agencies of up to five people, on Teams at $32 a month billed yearly

Who it is not for

  • Not for you if you want proper books, as Moxie's accounting is basic tracking
  • Skip it if you want a free plan to start on, since there's only a 14-day trial
  • Tight if your agency grows past five, because Teams stops at five members

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Moxie you could make: invoicing, time tracking, expense tracking, sales pipeline and forms. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 8 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools grade higher. It costs $120 a year.

What you could make

  • Invoicing, time tracking, expense tracking, sales pipeline and forms: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Booking pages that read and write other people's calendars and send the emails.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Stripe, PayPal and Plaid among them.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.

What this rests on. Moxie’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
