Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 7 of the 9 other AI voice generators we grade
NaturalReader is mainly a reading tool: it reads documents, PDFs, web pages and photographed text aloud for your own listening, on the web, phones, a Chrome extension and desktop software. Audio from the personal plans is for private use only. A separate Commercial app, priced by monthly credits, makes licensed voiceovers and clones your voice.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about NaturalReader, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The only confusing part is that reading and voiceovers are two apps with two subscriptions.
- 1
Best for listening to documents, with voiceovers on the side
NaturalReader is mostly a reader: point it at a PDF, a web page or a photo of a page and it reads it to you, on almost any device.
- 2
Paid plans start at $9.92 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $9.92 per month, billed annually ($20.90 billed monthly).
- 3
There is a free plan
Free personal plan: unlimited listening with the free voices, 5 minutes a day of Plus AI voices and limited AI features. For personal use only, with no MP3 downloads.
- 4
It runs on 5 platforms
Web, iOS, Android, Windows and macOS, with a browser extension too.
- 5
Read anything aloud
Listen to text, PDFs, Word files, ePubs, web pages and photos of printed pages, with an OCR scanner on the paid personal plans.
- 6
AI reading tools
Turn a document into a podcast-style episode, get a recap of its key points, ask questions about it or generate quizzes.
- 7
Chrome extension and mobile apps
A Chrome extension reads web pages where you find them, and iOS and Android apps let you listen on the go.
- 8
A 2.8 GPA, above 7 of 9
That is against the other AI voice generators we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace NaturalReader you would be making a voice model, which you can rent by the minute but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for listening to documents, with voiceovers on the side
NaturalReader is mostly a reader: point it at a PDF, a web page or a photo of a page and it reads it to you, on almost any device. We graded it mainly as that. It also sells a separate Commercial app for voiceovers you can publish, with voice cloning, but that's a second app and a second bill, and the reading plans' audio is for your ears only.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | As a reader, Plus is $9.92 a month billed yearly ($20.90 monthly), a bit under Speechify's Premium. For voiceovers you need Commercial Starter: $16.5 a month billed yearly for 500,000 credits, spent per character at a rate that depends on the voice. Middle of the road both ways. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Graded as a reader, it's one you can live on: unlimited listening with the free voices, plus 5 minutes a day of the better ones, and no card needed. For voiceovers it's no use, as it's personal use only with no MP3 downloads. |
| Features | B | It reads PDFs, Word files, ePubs, web pages and photographed pages aloud, turns documents into podcast-style episodes and quizzes, and has a Commercial app with Gemini, OpenAI, Azure and ElevenLabs voices and cloning. Both jobs are covered, in separate apps. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.55 from 9,134 App Store ratings. Open a document and press play. The only confusing part is that reading and voiceovers are two apps with two subscriptions. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone, Android, a Chrome extension, and Windows and Mac software. That's every device, but no API or integrations are listed, which keeps it off an A. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who NaturalReader is for
- Great if you'd rather listen to PDFs and articles than read them
- Handy when reading is hard work, such as with dyslexia
- Good for schools, which can buy group or site licenses
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want to publish what the reading plans make, as that needs the Commercial app
- Not for you if you want one subscription for listening and voiceovers
- Pricey if you want the desktop software too, sold separately from $99.50
Good to know
Good for
- Students and readers who prefer to listen to documents and web pages
- People with dyslexia or other reading difficulties
- Schools that want group or site licenses
- Creators who need licensed voiceovers from several AI voice models
Worth knowing
- Audio from the Free, Plus and Pro plans is for private listening only; publishing it, even for internal training or a nonprofit, needs a Commercial plan.
- Commercial is a separate app and subscription, and its downloads need a paid plan. Commercial subscriptions are non-refundable.
- Paid personal plans cap MP3 conversion at 1 million characters a month, and Commercial credits are spent per character at a rate that varies by voice.
- The desktop software is sold apart from the subscriptions, as one-time licenses of $99.50, $129.50 or $199.50.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace NaturalReader you would be making a voice model, which you can rent by the minute but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 7 of the 9 other AI voice generators we grade. It costs $119.04 a year.
What you could not
- A voice model, which you can rent by the minute but not make.
- A voice model trained on your recordings.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. NaturalReader’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
