Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 4 of the 19 other business phone systems we grade

Nextiva is a cloud phone system for small and mid-sized businesses, with calling, business texting, video meetings and team chat in one app on desktop, mobile and the web. Higher plans add live chat, a toll-free number, a built-in call center and AI call notes, and an AI receptionist called XBert can answer calls, texts and chats as an add-on.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Nextiva, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Core is self-serve, but Engage and Scale go through a sales demo, and there are phone menus to build before you're running.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for phone, texts, video and web chat from one provider

There's no free trial, and the two bigger plans are sold through a sales demo.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $15 a month for each person

As its pricing page puts it: $15 per user / month, billed annually ($23 billed monthly).

  3. 3

    It runs on 6 platforms

Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android.

  4. 4

    Calling and phone menus

Unlimited calls with an auto-attendant and call menus on every plan. Smart call routing comes with Scale or with the call center add-on on Engage.

  5. 5

    Business texting

Texts from the business number: 100 per user a month on Core, 500 on Engage and unlimited on Scale. Customers texting the team needs Engage.

  6. 6

    Video meetings and team chat

Video calls with screen and file sharing and team messaging sit in the same app. Recording video meetings needs Engage or Scale.

  7. 7

    A 2.2 GPA, above 4 of 19

That is against the other business phone systems we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  8. 8

    Keep it

To replace Nextiva you would be making phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

Where it stands

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

4/19

Other business phone systems it is graded above

Nextiva's GPA of 2.2 is higher than 4 of the 19 other business phone systems we grade, and level with 3.

It stands best on platforms and integrations (A, above 9 of 19) and worst on free plan and trial (F, above 0).

Its paid plans start at $15 a month for each person, against a middle price of $19 for the category: 5 of the 16 others that charge start lower.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 3.0 out of 4. Nothing scores higher for less, though at least one tool matches that score at a lower price.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Nextiva you would be making phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 12 of the 19 other business phone systems grade higher. It costs $180 a year.

What you could not

  • Phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network.
  • Video calls.
  • Chat that a whole team counts on staying up.
  • Texts from a business number, registered with the carriers.
  • Speech turned into text you can trust.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, Microsoft Teams, Salesforce and HubSpot among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Nextiva’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
