Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 38 of the 48 other AI meeting note takers we grade

Quill is a desktop meeting assistant for Mac and Windows that records and transcribes calls and in-person meetings on your own computer, with no bot joining. The free version covers unlimited local recording and transcription with speaker identification. Paid plans add AI-generated minutes, action items, templates and automations, using Quill's hosted model or an LLM you supply, plus companion apps for iPhone and Android.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Quill Meetings, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for local, bot-free notes with your choice of AI

The free version stops at the transcript, though.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $6.99 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $6.99 per month, billed annually.

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Quill Free: unlimited local recordings and transcripts with speaker identification and a local MCP server. No auto-generated AI notes, encrypted sync and backup, or mobile app.

  4. 4

    It runs on 4 platforms

    macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Bot-free local recording

Captures your microphone and the computer's audio, so it works with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Slack huddles, Webex, FaceTime and in-person meetings. It records audio only, not video.

  6. 6

    On-device transcription

Transcribes 29 languages with auto-detection on your computer and identifies speakers, learning who is who across meetings. Recording and transcription work without internet.

  7. 7

    Live Minutes and AI notes

Pro builds minutes while the meeting is under way, then lists decisions, action items, owners and follow-up drafts. Templates can be set per meeting type.

  8. 8

    A 3.0 GPA, above 38 of 48

That is against the other AI meeting note takers we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace Quill Meetings you would be making a bot that joins your calls and turns the talk into notes. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for local, bot-free notes with your choice of AI

Quill records and transcribes meetings on your own Mac or Windows computer, with no bot and no internet needed, and the free version does that with no monthly quota. The free version stops at the transcript, though. AI notes, sync, backup and the phone apps all need a paid plan, Lite caps you at 16 hours of pro meetings a month, and there's no web app, no iPad app and no video.

ToolGPA report cardQuill MeetingsGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBLite is $6.99 a month billed yearly and $7.99 month to month, inside the cheapest quarter for this category, and it includes the live minutes and action items. The cap is 16 hours of pro meetings a month; unlimited for one person is $16.99.
Free plan and trialBUnlimited local recordings and transcripts with speakers identified, and no monthly quota on any of it, so one person could sit on the free version for good. What's missing isn't an amount, it's the AI notes themselves, plus sync, backup and the phone app.
FeaturesBIt covers the job without a bot: it listens to your mic and your computer, so Zoom, Teams, Meet, FaceTime and a meeting round a table all work, transcribes 29 languages on the device, then writes live minutes, decisions and action items with templates and automations. Audio only, and no browser recording.
Ease of useBNo rating on record, so this rests on the setup, and there isn't one: install the desktop app and hit record, with no bot to invite and no calendar to connect. It works offline too. The Mac app does want Apple Silicon and macOS 12 or later.
Platforms and integrationsBMac and Windows, with iPhone and Android companions, sending notes to Slack, Notion, Todoist, Linear, Jira and CRMs, plus a local MCP server for Claude and Cursor. No web app and no iPad, and the phone apps need a paid plan and the desktop app.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Quill Meetings is for

  • Fits if your conversations can't be sent to a cloud notetaker or a bot in the call
  • Makes sense if you want to pick the AI model that reads your transcripts, local models included

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want AI notes for free: the free version stops at the transcript, with no sync, backup or phone app
  • Tight if you're on Lite and in meetings all week, at 16 hours of pro meetings a month before $16.99 for Unlimited
  • Pricey if you're a team of fewer than 5, since Teams at $12 a seat has a 5-seat minimum
  • Not for you if you want video, a web app, an iPad app or an Intel Mac: it records audio only and the Mac app needs Apple Silicon
  • Watch out: the phone apps need a paid plan plus the desktop app, cloud sync skips the audio, and the trial's length isn't stated

Good to know

Good for

  • Professionals whose conversations cannot be sent to a cloud notetaker
  • People who want free, unlimited local transcription
  • Teams that want to choose which AI model reads their transcripts

Worth knowing

  • Without Pro, Quill does not auto-generate AI notes, and encrypted sync and backup and the mobile app are unavailable.
  • Lite includes 16 hours of pro meetings a month. Unlimited hours need the Unlimited or Teams plan, and Teams has a 5-seat minimum.
  • The iPhone and Android apps are companions that need a paid plan and the desktop app. There is no iPad app and no recording from a browser.
  • The Mac app needs Apple Silicon and macOS 12 or later, and cloud sync covers transcripts and notes but not audio recordings.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Quill Meetings you would be making a bot that joins your calls and turns the talk into notes. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 38 of the 48 other AI meeting note takers we grade. It costs $83.88 a year.

What you could not

  • A bot that joins your calls and turns the talk into notes.
  • An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
  • Speech turned into text you can trust.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Notion, Slack and Salesforce among them.
  • End-to-end encryption done properly.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Quill Meetings’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
