Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 20 of the 79 other project management tools we grade
Quire is a project management tool built around a nested task list that can be broken down to any depth, with Kanban boards on every plan. Paid plans add timeline (Gantt), calendar, table and dashboard views, time tracking and task dependencies. The free plan covers up to 10 members and 4 projects, and Quire runs in the browser and in iOS and Android apps.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Quire, taken from its own pages and our grades.
One plain idea, a list you keep breaking down, does help.
- 1
Best for work that breaks down into subtasks of subtasks
Quire is a task list that nests as deep as you like, so a big job breaks into subtasks of subtasks that can be flipped onto a Kanban board.
- 2
Paid plans start at $7.65 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $7.65 per member / month, billed yearly.
- 3
There is a free plan
Up to 10 members, 4 projects and 1,000 tasks per project, with nested lists, Kanban boards, chat, and 1 document and 1 custom field per project.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 5
Nested task list
Tasks break down into subtasks with no limit on depth on every plan, and sublists give each person a focused slice of the main list.
- 6
Kanban board
The same tasks can be arranged on a board and moved through statuses. The free plan allows 5 task statuses per project and Professional 25.
- 7
Timeline and other views
Professional adds a Gantt-style timeline with task dependencies, plus table, calendar, dashboard and insight views. Premium adds a schedule view grouped by day.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 20 of 79
That is against the other project management tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for work that breaks down into subtasks of subtasks
Quire is a task list that nests as deep as you like, so a big job breaks into subtasks of subtasks that can be flipped onto a Kanban board. The free plan takes 10 members but stops at 4 projects with a 5-day activity log. The timeline, calendar, time tracking and dependencies need Professional at $7.65 a member, there are no refunds, and there's no official desktop app.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Professional is $7.65 a member a month billed yearly, which sits between the $5.10 cheaper quarter and the $10.00 dear end for project tools here. An ordinary price, in other words. Pay monthly and it's $10.95, and timesheets and approvals wait for Premium at $13.95. |
| Free plan and trial | C | The free plan has caps you'll hit: 4 projects of 1,000 tasks, 1 document and 1 custom field per project, and an activity log that only goes back 5 days. Up to 10 members are allowed. Paid plans get a 30-day trial. |
| Features | B | It covers the whole job. Tasks nest with no limit on depth, the same tasks sit on a Kanban board, and paid plans add a Gantt-style timeline with dependencies, table, calendar and dashboard views, time tracking with a Pomodoro timer, timesheets and external teams who see only their own tasks. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and this is a web app where the work is building the project itself: statuses to set up, a list to structure, people to invite. One plain idea, a list you keep breaking down, does help. Clients can view a project through a link with no signup, on paid plans. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone and Android, with Slack, Microsoft Teams, GitHub, Zapier, n8n, Google Drive and a public API. No official desktop app, though. The only one in its own app directory is marked non-official. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Quire is for
- Fits if your work breaks down into deeply nested subtasks
- Works for small teams of up to 10 starting free, with no more than 4 projects
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're staying free, with 4 projects, 1 custom field per project and a 5-day activity log
- Skip it if you need a timeline, calendar, time tracking or dependencies without paying, as all start on Professional
- Pricey if you pay monthly, at $10.95 a member against $7.65 on yearly billing
- Watch out: external team members count as paid members, and Quire doesn't refund after cancellation
- Watch out: there's no official desktop app, and SSO/SAML is Enterprise only at $19.95 a member

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Quire you could make: tasks, kanban boards, Gantt & timelines, calendar, time tracking and documents. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 38 of the 79 other project management tools grade higher. It costs $91.80 a year.
What you could make
- Tasks, kanban boards, Gantt & timelines, calendar, time tracking and documents: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Slack, Microsoft Teams and GitHub among them, and has an API.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Quire’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
