Sendy
Self-hosted newsletter app that sends through Amazon SES
Sendy report card
Fair · out of 4.0 · graded Oct 17, 2026
Best for big lists without a monthly bill
Sendy is the odd one out: you buy it once for $69, install it on your own server and send through Amazon SES at $1.6 per 10,000 emails. For a big list that's a tiny fraction of what subscription tools charge. But you have to host and look after it yourself, and there's no trial.
Who Sendy is for
- Great if you publish to a list of tens of thousands and are tired of per-subscriber bills
- Handy when you already run a PHP web host and can look after one more app
- Good for agencies, who can give each client a branded account with its own limits
Who Sendy is not for
- Skip it if the words PHP, MySQL and Amazon SES make you nervous, as you set them up
- Not for you if you want to try it first, as there's no trial, only a refund
- Tight if you run several sites, since each license covers one domain
Why Sendy gets a 2.0
Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.
- AValue for money$69 once for one domain, less than half a year of this category's middle subscription. Sending is Amazon's $1.6 per 10,000 emails, so even a big list costs little. Add your own server, $79 if you want Sendy to install it, and $39 for the AI add-on.
- FFree plan and trialNothing is free and there's no trial. Sendy promises a refund if it doesn't work out, but a money-back promise isn't a trial.
- CFeaturesThree editors, autoresponders on intervals or dates, rules and webhooks, segments, custom fields, live reports, automatic list cleaning and white-labeled client brands. It does newsletters fully, but it's a smaller job, and it can't send without your own Amazon SES or SMTP account.
- DEase of useNo App Store rating on record, and you install it yourself on a PHP and MySQL server and set up your own Amazon SES account. That's self-hosting, which puts it at a D. Sendy will install it for $79.
- BPlatforms and integrationsIt runs in a browser on your own server, with Amazon SES, SendGrid, Mailjet, Elastic Email, Zapier, WordPress, Magento and Joomla, plus an API. No desktop or phone app, so a B.

Keep Sendy, or make your own?
Keep it

What you could not
- Newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox.
- Email sent in volume that still reaches the inbox.
- It plugs into other products, Amazon SES, SendGrid and Mailjet among them, and has an API.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.
What this rests on. Sendy’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
