Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 13 of the 19 other business phone systems we grade
Talkroute is a virtual phone system for small businesses with local and toll-free numbers, call menus and extensions, voicemail, business texting and video meetings in one app on desktop, mobile and the web. Plans are a monthly price for a set number of users, numbers and texts, with calling included and extra users at $5 each. An AI receptionist and bulk texting are sold as add-ons.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Talkroute, taken from its own pages and our grades.
But call recording waits for Pro, and Zapier is the only integration.
- 1

The report card
Best for one flat price for a few people and a call menu
Talkroute is a simple virtual phone system with call menus, texting and video meetings, and it's one of the few with a Linux app. Five people on Plus pay $49 a month, under $10 each. But call recording waits for Pro, and Zapier is the only integration.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | Plus is $39 a month for 3 users plus $5 for each extra, so $49 for five, about $9.80 a head, inside this category's cheaper quarter ($14). Those are monthly prices. On your own, Basic is $19. |
| Free plan and trial | C | A 7-day free trial: cancel inside the 7 days and nothing is charged. No free plan. |
| Features | C | Local and toll-free numbers, call menus and extensions, texting, voicemail and video meetings for 100. It covers the basics, but recording and reporting need Pro, texts are capped (2,000 a month on Plus), and the AI receptionist is in beta. |
| Ease of use | C | No App Store rating on record. There's a call menu and extensions to set up, and local numbers need texting registration first. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android, which few here match, plus an API. Zapier is the only listed integration. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Talkroute is for
- Great if you want one bill for a handful of people, with $5 for each extra
- Handy when callers should press 1 for sales and 2 for support
- A treat if you're on Linux, as Talkroute ships a Linux desktop app
Who it is not for
- Tight if you need call recording, which only comes with Pro at $59
- Not for you if you want calls logged in a CRM, as Zapier is the only integration
- Skip it if you want yearly prices up front, as the page shows monthly ones only
Good to know
Good for
- Small businesses that want one price for a few users
- Teams that want call menus and extensions without desk phones
- Linux users, since Talkroute ships a Linux desktop app
Worth knowing
- The pricing page shows monthly prices only; it says annual plans save money but gives no annual prices.
- Call recording, reporting and a HIPAA business associate agreement need the Pro plan.
- Texting from local numbers needs registration: $19 once on Basic or $15 on Plus, plus $1.50 a month on Basic.
- The AI Receptionist (beta) starts at $39 a month plus $0.40 per AI minute, and bulk texting at $55 a month; both need a phone plan.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Talkroute you would be making phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.6 is higher than 13 of the 19 other business phone systems we grade. It costs $228 a year.
What you could not
- Phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network.
- Video calls.
- Texts from a business number, registered with the carriers.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, Zapier among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
