Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 6 of the 14 other hiring and applicant tracking tools we grade

Workable is an applicant tracking system that posts jobs to 200+ boards, searches a database of candidate profiles and moves applicants through custom pipelines with scorecards and self-scheduled interviews. An HR product for records, onboarding and time off can be added, and Workable Agent, an AI add-on, sources and screens candidates for credits. Prices follow the number of employees, not seats.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Workable, taken from its own pages and our grades.

There's a lot here, from sourcing to pipelines and permissions, so expect some setting up.

Value for moneyDStandard is $299 a month on yearly billing for up to 20 employees, so that's what a ten-person company pays. It buys unlimited jobs, sourcing, a careers page and the API. That's the top of this category, and texting, video interviews and assessments still cost extra.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan, but a 15-day trial with Standard's features and no card. Workable Agent, the AI add-on, is left out of the trial.
FeaturesBPosting to 200+ boards, a search of 400M+ profiles, interview kits and scorecards, self-scheduled interviews, calendar sync and EEO reporting. The whole hiring job, with an HR product for records and time off if you want it.
Ease of useCNo App Store rating on record. There's a lot here, from sourcing to pipelines and permissions, so expect some setting up.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone, Android and a Chrome extension, with LinkedIn, Indeed, Gmail, Microsoft 365, Zoom, Teams and Meet, and the API from Standard up. No desktop app.

Who Workable is for

  • Great if you want one job post sent to every board that matters
  • Handy when the best people aren't applying and you need to go and find them
  • Good for US employers that need EEO and OFCCP reporting

Who it is not for

  • Pricey if you're a small team, as Standard is $299 a month even at ten people
  • Tight if you want video interviews or tests on Standard, at $109 and $59 a month extra
  • Skip it if you want HR thrown in, as Workable HR is $99 a month on its own

Good to know

Good for

  • Small and mid-sized companies that post many jobs to many boards
  • Teams that want recruiting and basic HR from one vendor
  • US employers that need EEO and OFCCP reporting

Worth knowing

  • Texting ($89), video interviews ($109) and assessments ($59 a month, billed annually, up to 20 employees) are add-ons on Standard; Premier includes them.
  • Premier and Enterprise are billed annually only, and companies with more than 1,000 employees get a quote.
  • Workable HR costs extra: $99 a month on its own, or $359 bundled with Standard recruiting, for up to 20 employees billed annually.
  • Workable Agent uses AI credits: 1 per screen, 2 per sourced candidate, 10 per chat. 3,000 are free, then 5,000 cost $600; the trial excludes it.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Workable you would be making jobs posted to dozens of job boards at once, which takes an agreement with each board. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It costs $3,588 a year.

What you could make

  • Applicant tracking, employee records and time off: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Jobs posted to dozens of job boards at once, which takes an agreement with each board.
  • An AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it.
  • A library of tested questions with scores to compare candidates by.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, LinkedIn, Indeed and Gmail among them.
  • Hooks into the device itself: widgets.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Workable’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
