The best Evernote alternatives in 2026

Six Evernote alternatives for people who have run into its limits: 50 notes on the Free plan, 1,000 on Starter and no Linux app. Each pick says who it suits, what it costs and where it stops.

Updated Oct 4, 2026 · 6 tools · How we pick

The usual reason to leave Evernote is how little its lower plans hold. The Free plan stops at 50 notes in 1 notebook and syncs on a single device. Starter, listed at $99 a year, is still capped at 1,000 notes, 20 notebooks and 3 synced devices, and unlimited notes need Advanced, listed at $249.99 a year. Those two prices come from a third-party listing, because Evernote's own pricing page could not be read.

Two smaller gaps matter to some people: there is no Linux app, and in-note encryption is offered only in the Mac and Windows apps. What Evernote is built for is collecting web pages, scans and documents and searching across them, with tasks and a calendar alongside. A replacement only has to match the part of that you use.

The six apps below run from the ones that suit the most people to the more specialized. Four can be used for free without a 50-note ceiling: Notion's Free plan gives one person unlimited pages, Obsidian is free without limits, Capacities Basic allows unlimited objects and Anytype is free with unlimited private spaces. Prices were read on the date shown on each tool's page, which also names the page each figure came from.

The picks in detail

  1. 01

    Notion

Best free all-rounderWorkspace for docs, wikis, databases and projects with built-in AI

Notion's Free plan gives one person unlimited pages and blocks, against 50 notes on Evernote's. Pages hold text, media and embeds and can be shared and co-edited, and databases organize items such as projects or tasks. It runs on the web, Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, and paid plans start at $10 per member a month billed yearly.

Worth knowing: The Free plan caps file uploads at 5 MB, which matters if you save scans and PDFs, and keeps 7 days of page history; there is no Linux desktop app.

    Obsidian

Best for notes you keep as filesMarkdown note-taking app that keeps your files on your device

Obsidian has no note or notebook limits to run into: the app is free without limits on desktop and mobile, and each note is a plain Markdown file on your own device. Its Web Clipper extension saves pages from Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, so you can keep clipping the web. It also runs on Linux, where Evernote has no app.

Worth knowing: Sync between devices is a paid add-on from $4 per user a month billed annually, with 1 GB of storage and a 5 MB file size limit on Sync Standard, and there is no web app.

    Capacities

Capacities Basic is free and syncs across devices, where Evernote's Free plan syncs on one. It allows unlimited objects and blocks with offline support and full-text search, and a browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox saves web pages to a space. Notes are typed objects, such as people, books and projects, rather than notes in notebooks, and there are apps for the web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android.

Worth knowing: Free media uploads are capped at 5 GB in total and then 100 MB a month, tasks and calendar integrations need Pro at $9.99 a month billed yearly, and sharing is view-only.

  4. 04

    Craft

Best for notes, tasks and a calendarNotes and documents app with tasks, daily notes and whiteboards

Craft covers Evernote's mix of notes, tasks and calendar: tasks sit inside documents and daily notes with a calendar view, and on Mac, iPhone and iPad your system calendar events appear alongside them. A browser extension clips web pages, and emails can be forwarded into a space. Plus is $96 a year for one account with unlimited documents.

Worth knowing: The free Starter plan stops at 1,500 content blocks and 1 GB of storage, and offline use covers only documents you opened earlier; search needs a connection.

  5. 05

    Bear

Bear is the pick if you only use Apple devices. Its web clipper saves full pages or selections from Safari, Chrome and Firefox, and Bear Pro searches for text inside photos and PDFs, which helps if you keep scans. Bear also has a migration guide for Evernote, and Pro, which adds iCloud sync and note encryption, is $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year.

Worth knowing: Bear is offered only for Apple devices, and the free version does not sync between them: sync, OCR search and note encryption all need Bear Pro.

  6. 06

    Anytype

Best for end-to-end encrypted notesLocal-first, end-to-end encrypted workspace for notes and data

Evernote offers in-note encryption only in its Mac and Windows apps. Anytype encrypts everything on your device before it syncs, on Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android alike, and keeps working without a connection. The app is free with unlimited private spaces, and you can sync through your own infrastructure or keep data on a single device.

Worth knowing: There is no browser version, the free tier includes 100 MB of remote storage for files, and in September 2026 the team announced a successor, Anytwo, and said development of the current app will slow down.

How to choose

Count what the free plan lets you keep

Evernote's Free plan stops at 50 notes synced on one device. Notion's Free plan gives one person unlimited pages and blocks, Obsidian's app is free without limits, Capacities Basic allows unlimited objects with sync, and Anytype is free with unlimited private spaces. Craft's Starter plan is capped at 1,500 content blocks, and Bear's free version has no sync.

If you clip web pages and keep scans

Obsidian's Web Clipper works in Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, Capacities has an extension for the same four browsers, and Bear's clipper works in Safari, Chrome and Firefox. Craft's browser extension clips pages too. For text inside images and PDFs, Bear Pro has OCR search. Mind the file limits if you store scans: Notion's Free plan caps uploads at 5 MB and Craft's Starter plan at 25 MB per file.

Check your devices

Evernote has no Linux app; Obsidian, Capacities and Anytype do. Bear is for Apple devices only. Notion, Craft and Capacities have web apps you can open in any browser, while Obsidian, Bear and Anytype do not.

Tasks, calendar and sharing

If you used Evernote's tasks and calendar, Craft has tasks, daily notes and a calendar view, and Capacities adds task management and calendar integrations on Pro. For shared notes, Notion pages can be co-edited and commented on, and Craft's Family and Team plans add shared spaces. Sharing in Capacities is view-only.

Common questions

Is there a free alternative to Evernote?

Yes. Notion's Free plan gives one person unlimited pages and blocks, Obsidian is free without limits on desktop and mobile, Capacities Basic is free with unlimited objects and sync across devices, and Anytype is free with unlimited private spaces. Evernote's own Free plan stops at 50 notes and syncs on one device.

Which Evernote alternatives have a web clipper?

Obsidian's Web Clipper saves pages from Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge. Bear's clipper works in Safari, Chrome and Firefox and can save a full page or a selection. Capacities has a browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, and Craft's browser extension clips web pages.

Which Evernote alternatives work on Linux?

Obsidian, Capacities and Anytype all list Linux desktop apps. Evernote does not: its desktop apps are for Mac and Windows only. Notion has no Linux desktop app either and points Linux users to its browser version.

Which Evernote alternative is best for Mac and iPhone?

Bear is made only for Apple devices: a Markdown notes app for Mac, iPhone and iPad with a web clipper, and Pro at $29.99 a year adds iCloud sync, OCR search and note encryption. Craft also suits people working mainly on Apple devices, showing system calendar events on Mac, iPhone and iPad, and it adds Windows, Android and web apps.

Which Evernote alternatives encrypt notes?

Anytype encrypts everything on your device before it syncs. Obsidian's paid Sync add-on is end-to-end encrypted, and Bear Pro can encrypt individual notes.
