  7. 7

Part 02 · Top three

Our top three

The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits

The three SEO browser extensions we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.

  1. 1st

    3.2GPA

    SEOquake

    Free

For: Most people checking pages and Google results

SEOquake is free from Semrush. Quick View shows a page's title, meta description, headings, canonical and indexability, then audits content, mobile and technical issues; the SERP Overlay puts position numbers and Semrush traffic and backlink figures under each Google result, with CSV export, and it lists the pages an AI Overview cites. Know the limits: the figures are Semrush estimates, not your own analytics, Authority Score, referring domains and Traffic Analytics need a Semrush account, though a free one is enough, and the Firefox version is 3.9.9 from December 2022, against 4.3.0 on Chrome.

    Sprout SEO

    Free

For: People on Firefox or Edge who want on-page checks

Sprout SEO is free in Chrome, Firefox and Edge, with no paid version. One panel covers indexability, canonicals, headings, links with their status, images missing alt text, JSON-LD, hreflang and a Core Web Vitals snapshot, and on Google results it adds Trends data, a People Also Ask export and a location simulator. It is second because it has no traffic, ranking or backlink figures of its own and links out to Ahrefs and Semrush for those. It checks one page at a time, and the Wayback exporter stops at about 100,000 URLs per domain.

    Keyword Surfer

    Free

For: Writers who want keyword volumes while they search

Keyword Surfer is free from Surfer and puts a query's search volume and cost per click beside Google's results, with keyword ideas, traffic and word-count estimates for the ranking pages, CSV collections and data for 70 countries. It is third because it does one part of the job: there are no page checks for titles, headings or schema, and no keyword database to search away from Google. It runs only in Chrome and other Chromium browsers, and the store listing says it handles location, user activity and website content data.

Keep or make?

Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself

0

Simple enough to make yourself, of 35

  • 34

It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.

  • 1

    Your call

You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.

What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.
