How we grade them

Value for money
DStarter is $5.65 a user a month billed yearly, so 15 staff pay $84.75 a month. That's the dearest figure in this category for a team that size. Team chat and live GPS tracking need Plus at $7.95 a head.
CWe can't tell you what Premium or Ultimate cost, because the plans page lists them with no amounts at all, so there's nothing to hold up against other time trackers. They're billed per seat, monthly or annually, and nonprofits can claim 50% off for life.
Free plan and trial
CNo free plan, but a 14-day trial of Advanced with no credit card needed. Two weeks is enough to see whether your crew takes to it.
AFree for unlimited users, with tracking on web, mobile, desktop and kiosk, plus timesheets and reports. In a category where only three tools are free outright, no cap on people at all is the real thing. The caps are 2 locations, 1 kiosk and 1 work schedule.
Features
CThe time clock side is strong: GPS punches, a kiosk, automatic timesheets and mileage logs. The scheduling half covers templates, open shifts, trades and covers, but nothing on record fills shifts from availability, and time-off requests need Advanced.
BClock-ins checked by face recognition, selfie, NFC tap or PIN, with GPS and geofences. Timesheets build themselves and managers approve them per pay period, and time off, overtime rules, projects and client invoices are all in there. Attendance is covered end to end.
Ease of use
B4.58 from 3,784 App Store ratings. Clocking in is a tap on the phone, which is most of what a crew will ever do in it.
A4.8 on the App Store from 1,558 ratings, which is the best in this category by some way. Clocking in is a tap, and entries made with no signal sync once the device is back online.
Platforms and integrations
BWeb, iPhone and Android. Payroll links are just QuickBooks Online and Xero, and the API only comes with Expert, which you buy through sales.
AWeb, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and a Chrome extension, plus a tablet set up as a kiosk. Slack, Microsoft Teams, QuickBooks Online, Xero, Deel and Zapier connect. There's no Linux app.

Key features

Atto

GPS time clock
Workers clock in and out from the iOS or Android app or a browser, with the location of each punch recorded and optional limits on clocking in away from the job site.
Shared kiosk
A time clock kiosk lets a whole crew clock in from one device at the job site.
Automatic timesheets
Clock-ins become timesheets with breaks and overtime worked out, ready to review and approve, and they connect to QuickBooks Online and Xero for payroll.
Shift scheduling
Managers build, copy and publish schedules with open shifts and templates, staff send trade and cover requests, and reminders nudge people who forget to clock in.
Location and mileage tracking
Higher plans show who is on the clock and where in real time, keep a location history report and log drives automatically for mileage reimbursements.
Team chat and activity feed
One-to-one and group chats, plus a daily feed of clock-ins, locations, jobs and status changes.

Jibble

Clock in from any device
Staff track hours from iOS and Android apps, Mac and Windows desktop apps, a Chrome extension, a browser, or a tablet set up as a shared kiosk.
Identity and location checks
Clock-ins can require face recognition, a selfie, an NFC tap or a PIN, and GPS stamps a location on each entry. Geofences restrict clock-ins to approved sites.
Timesheets and approvals
Time entries build timesheets automatically. Managers review and approve them per pay period, and reports export as XLS or CSV for payroll.
Time off and work schedules
Leave policies, accruals and requests are managed alongside tracked hours, with work schedules and overtime rules. The Free plan allows 1 work schedule.
Projects and invoicing
Time can be logged against projects, activities and clients, then turned into client invoices. A Xero integration sends invoices from payroll hours.
Offline mode and screenshots
Entries made without a connection sync once the device is back online. The Mac and Windows apps can capture screenshots, kept for 3 days on the Free plan.
