Value for money
CCore is $8 a user a month billed annually, $9 monthly, which is exactly the middle price in this category, and $7 from 20 users. Ordinary, then. Mind the ladder above it: custom fields need Advanced at $12, and workload, budgets, time tracking and the API need Business at $19.
DLite is under $9 a user a month billed yearly, ordinary for presentation tools, but it allows 2 swimlanes. Unlimited swimlanes and Excel import need Plus at under $17, and refreshing from Project or Jira needs Expert at under $21, all on top of PowerPoint itself.
Free plan and trial
CNo free plan at all. There's a 14-day trial with everything switched on and no card asked for, and then you subscribe. On your own you can only buy it annually.
CThe free add-in doesn't run out and has the themes, but each slide stops at 10 milestones and tasks, with limited swimlanes and 1 timescale. Fine for a simple roadmap; a real project plan won't fit.
Features
CThe Gantt side is done fully: dependencies, auto scheduling, critical path, baselines, milestones, plus board, list and dashboard views and export to PDF, PNG, XLSX and XML. But that is the narrower half of running a project, and workload, portfolio, budgets, reports and time logs all need Business.
DThe timeline work is thorough: swimlanes, dependencies, critical path, up to 3 timescales, import and refresh from Project, Smartsheet and Jira, and planned against actual. But it's one narrow job, and it needs PowerPoint on Windows to be any use.
Ease of use
CNo store rating on record. This is a tool where the work is building the plan itself, task by task, with dependencies to wire up, so there's a learning curve. The AI chart maker on every plan at least gives you a first draft to push around.
BNo rating on record, but it sits on the PowerPoint ribbon you already use: type the dates in or import a plan, and out comes a normal slide you can edit. Nothing to export, nothing to learn outside PowerPoint.
Platforms and integrations
BWeb, iPhone and Android, with no desktop app on record. It connects to Teams, Slack, Google Drive, OneDrive, Google Calendar and Outlook Calendar, though Jira Cloud and the API wait for Business.
CThe add-in is Windows and PowerPoint only, and Mac or browser users need Timeline Online, a separate licence. It does pull plans from Excel, Project, Smartsheet, Jira and Wrike, but there are no phone apps.

  • Organizations that want their data stored in EU data centers

Lucen Timeline

  • Project managers who report schedules to executives in PowerPoint
  • Teams that keep plans in Microsoft Project, Smartsheet or Jira and need slides from them

Worth knowing

GanttPRO

  • There is no free plan: a subscription is needed after the 14-day trial, and single-user accounts are sold on annual billing only.
  • Workload, portfolio view, time tracking, budgets, reports, the Jira Cloud integration and the API all need the Business plan.
  • SAML SSO and custom roles need Enterprise, which requires at least 5 users and an annual subscription.
  • Storage is 1 GB per user on Core, Advanced and Business. Data cannot be edited offline.

Lucen Timeline

  • The add-in needs Windows and PowerPoint. Timeline Online, for Mac and browser users, is a separate license at less than $13 a month billed annually.
  • The free version stops at 10 milestones and tasks per slide, and its license has to be renewed each year.
  • Microsoft Project, Jira, Smartsheet and Wrike import and planned vs. actual tracking need the Expert plan.
  • Licenses are per user and sold only as yearly subscriptions, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Key features

GanttPRO

Gantt charts with auto scheduling
Tasks are linked by dependencies and rescheduled automatically when dates change. Critical path, baselines, milestones and deadlines are included on every plan.
Board, list and dashboard views
A project can be switched from the Gantt chart to a Kanban-style board, a list or a dashboard on any plan. Calendar view starts on Advanced, portfolio and workload views on Business.
Workload and budgets
The Business plan shows each person's workload so work can be reallocated, and adds resource calendars, cost estimation and budget planning.
Time logs and reports
On Business and Enterprise, people log actual time on tasks, and owners and admins build reports on logged time that can be grouped, filtered and exported to Excel.
AI Gantt chart maker
An AI tool that drafts a Gantt chart is included in all four plans, according to the pricing page.
Sharing and export
A private link shares a live or static view of the chart with people outside the team, and charts export to PDF, PNG, XLSX and XML.

Lucen Timeline

Timelines built inside PowerPoint
The add-in sits on the PowerPoint ribbon and creates timelines and Gantt charts as native, editable slides, so there is nothing to export.
Swimlanes and timescales
Group tasks into swimlanes and nested sub-swimlanes and show up to 3 timescales on one chart. Lite allows 2 swimlanes; Plus and Expert are unlimited.
Dependencies and critical path
Link tasks and highlight the critical path from Plus. Importing dependencies from a source plan needs Expert.
Import and refresh
Plus imports from Excel. Expert imports and refreshes from Microsoft Project, Smartsheet and Jira, including several Jira projects or boards, and imports from Wrike.
Planned vs. actual
Expert shows progress bars, baselines and variance against the original plan, so a slide can show where a project has slipped.
Templates and themes
Pre-designed themes on every plan, timeline, Gantt and swimlane templates from Lite, and custom themes that can be shared and imported on Expert.
