Value for money
DLite is under $9 a user a month billed yearly, ordinary for presentation tools, but it allows 2 swimlanes. Unlimited swimlanes and Excel import need Plus at under $17, and refreshing from Project or Jira needs Expert at under $21, all on top of PowerPoint itself.
DStarter is $12.25 a person a month billed yearly, $29 month to month, and the parts a business comes for sit well above the $9.99 middle: Brand Kit, analytics, privacy controls and an editable PowerPoint export all start at Pro, $24.75 a person a month.
Free plan and trial
CThe free add-in doesn't run out and has the themes, but each slide stops at 10 milestones and tasks, with limited swimlanes and 1 timescale. Fine for a simple roadmap; a real project plan won't fit.
CBasic is free with unlimited projects and most templates, then the caps land: 50 slides a project, 500 MB of storage, 10 AI credits a month and the Visme logo on your work. Even JPG, PNG and PDF downloads start on Starter.
Features
DThe timeline work is thorough: swimlanes, dependencies, critical path, up to 3 timescales, import and refresh from Project, Smartsheet and Jira, and planned against actual. But it's one narrow job, and it needs PowerPoint on Windows to be any use.
BIt covers the job and a good deal more: templates for over 50 kinds of content, charts, maps and data widgets, animation, hover effects and clickable hotspots, an AI Designer that drafts from a prompt, and a Recording Studio that captures you narrating for up to 45 minutes on paid plans.
Ease of use
BNo rating on record, but it sits on the PowerPoint ribbon you already use: type the dates in or import a plan, and out comes a normal slide you can edit. Nothing to export, nothing to learn outside PowerPoint.
B4.58 from about 1,100 App Store ratings, short of the 4.7 an A asks for but comfortably above the middle of this category. You start from a template, and the Brand Wizard builds your brand kit from a website address.
Platforms and integrations
CThe add-in is Windows and PowerPoint only, and Mac or browser users need Timeline Online, a separate licence. It does pull plans from Excel, Project, Smartsheet, Jira and Wrike, but there are no phone apps.
BBrowser, Mac and Windows desktop apps and an iOS app, with Salesforce, Mailchimp, Zapier, Slack, Google Drive and Dropbox among the integrations. No Android yet, which the download page still lists as coming soon, so it can't take the top mark.

Key features

Lucen Timeline

Timelines built inside PowerPoint
The add-in sits on the PowerPoint ribbon and creates timelines and Gantt charts as native, editable slides, so there is nothing to export.
Swimlanes and timescales
Group tasks into swimlanes and nested sub-swimlanes and show up to 3 timescales on one chart. Lite allows 2 swimlanes; Plus and Expert are unlimited.
Dependencies and critical path
Link tasks and highlight the critical path from Plus. Importing dependencies from a source plan needs Expert.
Import and refresh
Plus imports from Excel. Expert imports and refreshes from Microsoft Project, Smartsheet and Jira, including several Jira projects or boards, and imports from Wrike.
Planned vs. actual
Expert shows progress bars, baselines and variance against the original plan, so a slide can show where a project has slipped.
Templates and themes
Pre-designed themes on every plan, timeline, Gantt and swimlane templates from Lite, and custom themes that can be shared and imported on Expert.

Visme

Templates for many content types
The template library covers more than 50 content types, including presentations, infographics, reports, proposals and social graphics. Premium templates need a paid plan.
AI Designer and AI tools
AI Designer turns a text prompt into a draft design, alongside an AI writer, image generator and image filters. Each use spends credits: 10 a month on Basic, 200 on Starter and 500 on Pro.
Brand Kit and Brand Wizard
Brand fonts, colors and logos are stored in a Brand Kit and applied to projects. The Brand Wizard builds one from a website URL. The full Brand Kit starts at the Pro plan.
Animation and interactivity
Slides can include animated elements, hover effects, clickable menus and hotspots. Custom animation, the full animation timeline and video and audio hotspots are Pro features.
Charts and data widgets
Statistics and figures can be shown as charts, graphs, maps and data widgets inside any project. The free plan has a limited set.
Collaboration and recording
Comments, annotation and live editing are on every plan. The Recording Studio captures a narrated presentation: up to 3 minutes on Basic and 45 minutes on paid plans.
