Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 7 of the 13 other e-signature and proposal tools we grade

Docusign eSignature lets you upload a document, place signature and form fields, and send it by email to one or more signers, who sign in a browser or the mobile app without an account. Plans are sold by the envelope allowance, and higher tiers add web forms, bulk sending and payment collection. Larger companies can move up to Docusign's agreement management plans, which add AI search and workflow tools.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Docusign, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Signers don't need an account either, which saves your clients a step.

The report card

Best for signing with the name every client knows

Docusign is the e-signature name most clients already know, with a phone app rated 4.9, web forms, payments and a huge list of integrations. It's also one of the dearest here: three people on Standard pay $75 a month, paid yearly, and that buys 100 envelopes each a year, not unlimited.

ToolGPA report cardDocusignGraded Oct 17, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyD$75 a month for three on Standard, paying the year upfront ($25 a head, or $30 on the annual plan billed monthly). That's this category's dearest tenth, for 100 envelopes each a year, so your 240 fit with a little to spare. Web forms, payments and bulk send need Business Pro at $40.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan, but a 30-day free trial, and the listing doesn't say it needs a card. After that even Personal is one user and 5 envelopes a month.
FeaturesBTemplates, signing order, an audit trail, reminders and AI summaries for signers, then web forms, payment collection and bulk send on Business Pro. It covers the whole job. SSO, HIPAA and Salesforce wait for the custom Enhanced plans, which a small team won't miss.
Ease of useA4.9 from about 830,000 App Store ratings, the biggest following in this category by miles. Signers don't need an account either, which saves your clients a step.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone and Android, with Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Dropbox and Box on every plan, and 1,000+ integrations plus the API from Business Pro. There's no desktop app, so it stops at a B.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Docusign is for

  • Great if your clients and partners already expect a Docusign envelope
  • Handy when you sign on your phone a lot, as the app is rated 4.9 by about 830,000 people
  • Good for teams that want web forms and payment at signing on one plan

Who it is not for

  • Pricey if you're a small team, at $25 a head a month even paying the year upfront
  • Tight if you send a lot, as each user gets 100 envelopes a year and extras are billed one by one
  • Skip it if you might cancel early, as the annual plan billed monthly holds you to the year

Good to know

Good for

  • Companies whose customers or partners already expect a Docusign envelope
  • Sales and operations teams sending a steady volume of standard agreements
  • Larger organizations that need SSO, compliance options and Salesforce links

Worth knowing

  • Standard and Business Pro include 100 envelopes per user a year on annual plans, or 10 a month on monthly plans; envelopes past the allowance are billed one by one.
  • Annual plans paid monthly are a one-year commitment: cancelling after the first 30 days means paying the rest of the year.
  • SMS delivery costs from $0.36 a message and ID verification from $2.40 an attempt, after five of each included once on Standard and Business Pro.
  • SSO, Salesforce and NetSuite integrations, HIPAA support and data residency are sold only with the custom Enhanced plans.

Docusign's GPA of 2.6 is higher than 7 of the 13 other e-signature and proposal tools we grade, and level with 4.

It stands best on ease of use (A, above 12 of 13) and worst on value for money (D, above 0).

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Docusign you could make: documents, templates and forms. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It costs $132 a year.

What you could make

  • Documents, templates and forms: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Salesforce, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace among them, and has an API.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Docusign’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
