Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 72 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Fabric is a workspace that keeps notes, files, saved links and meeting recordings in one searchable library, with an AI assistant that answers from that content. Items can be found by meaning, color or a reference image, laid out on an infinite canvas, turned into tasks, or published as shareable pages. It runs on the web, desktop and mobile, and paid plans differ mainly in storage and AI usage.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Fabric, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No store rating on record, so we go by the listing: you can leave things unfiled and let search find them.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for notes, files and saved links in one searchable pile

Fabric is one library for notes, files, bookmarks and meeting recordings, with an AI assistant that answers from what you saved and search by description or color.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $8 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $8 per month, billed yearly at $96 (Plus).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

A free plan exists: the user guide and feature pages refer to it, and sign-up is advertised as $0. The pricing page lists only paid plans and does not publish the free plan's limits.

  4. 4

    It runs on 6 platforms

Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.

  5. 5

Notes, files and links in one library

Stores notes, documents, PDFs, images, video, audio and saved links together, organized into spaces and folders or simply left for search to find.

  6. 6

Search by meaning, color or image

Finds items by description instead of file name, searches inside documents and audio or video transcripts, and matches images by color or by a reference image.

  7. 7

    AI assistant and agents

The assistant answers from your own content with citations, and named agents run scheduled jobs: up to 10 on Pro and up to 50 on Max.

  8. 8

    A 2.8 GPA, above 72 of 147

That is against the other note-taking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace Fabric you would be making a search engine with an AI model behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for notes, files and saved links in one searchable pile

Fabric is one library for notes, files, bookmarks and meeting recordings, with an AI assistant that answers from what you saved and search by description or color. Plus is $8 a month billed yearly. A free plan exists but its limits aren't published, AI use is metered with top-ups past the allowance, there are no refunds, and desktop file sync is Mac and Windows only.

ToolGPA report cardFabricGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCPlus is $8 a month billed yearly at $96, or $10 month by month, which is the dear end of a category whose middle is $6. AI use is metered as well, so going past your allowance means buying top-ups, and the vendor offers no refunds.
Free plan and trialCA free plan exists and sign-up is advertised as $0, but the pricing page lists only paid plans and never publishes the free storage or AI limits. So there are caps, and you'll find them by hitting them. The 14-day trial is for Teams only.
FeaturesBNotes, PDFs, images, video and links in one library, search by meaning, colour or a reference image, an assistant that cites your own content, meeting notes with transcripts, an infinite canvas, tasks with kanban, spaces published as a link. Desktop file sync is Mac and Windows only, though.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, so we go by the listing: you can leave things unfiled and let search find them. The phone app is thinner, with no kanban and no list view.
Platforms and integrationsAWeb, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and a browser extension, plus Gmail, Slack, Google Drive, Dropbox, Notion, Linear, Figma and Readwise. The one hole is desktop file sync, which is macOS and Windows only.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Fabric is for

  • Fits if your notes, files and bookmarks sit in five places and you want them in one
  • Works for freelancers who share work with clients as a published space, no login needed

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want to know the free plan's limits up front, because they aren't published
  • Pricey if you lean on the AI, since usage is metered monthly and more means top-ups, and Pro is $18 a month billed yearly
  • Not for you if you might want your money back, as the vendor doesn't offer refunds
  • Watch out: desktop file sync is macOS and Windows only, and the phone app has no kanban or list view
  • Watch out: the pricing page claims up to 25% off yearly, but its own Plus prices work out to 20%

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want notes, files and bookmarks searchable in one place
  • Designers finding saved visual references by color or image
  • Freelancers and small teams sharing work with clients as published spaces

Worth knowing

  • The pricing page lists only paid plans; a free plan is mentioned elsewhere on the site, but its limits are not published.
  • AI usage is metered and resets monthly, and going past a plan's allowance means buying top-ups.
  • The vendor does not offer refunds, although a plan can be cancelled at any time.
  • Desktop file sync works on macOS and Windows only, and the mobile app has no kanban or list view.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Fabric you would be making a search engine with an AI model behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It costs $96 a year.

What you could make

  • Notes and web clipper: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A search engine with an AI model behind it.
  • A bot that joins your calls and turns the talk into notes.
  • Files kept in step across devices without losing one.
  • An endless canvas that stays smooth with hundreds of things on it.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Gmail, Slack and Google Drive among them.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Fabric’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
