Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
3.2
GPA, above 30 of the 30 other form and survey tools we grade
Google Forms is Google's builder for online forms, surveys and quizzes. Forms are put together in a browser with a drag-and-drop editor, shared by link, email or embed, and the answers show up as charts or in a linked Google Sheet. It is free with a personal Google Account, and the business version is not sold on its own: it is bundled in every Google Workspace edition.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Google Forms, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, and there is nothing to set up: no new account, no plan to pick, no install.
- 1
Best for quick free forms, polls and quizzes
Google Forms comes free with a Google Account and sends answers to a Google Sheet as they arrive.
- 2
Paid plans start at $7 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $7 per user / month with a 1-year commitment (Workspace Business Starter).
- 3
There is a free plan
Free with a personal Google Account at forms.google.com. Workspace Essentials Starter, a no-cost edition for work email addresses, also includes Forms. Gemini form drafting needs an eligible paid plan.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Drag-and-drop form editor
Choose from multiple question types, reorder them by dragging, and add images or videos. File upload questions save submissions to a folder in the owner's Google Drive.
- 6
Answer-based logic
Show questions based on earlier answers, so each respondent only goes through the sections that apply to them.
- 7
Quizzes with answer keys
Turn a form into a quiz with point values and answer keys on supported question types, and attach a written or YouTube explanation to an answer.
- 8
A 3.2 GPA, above 30 of 30
That is against the other form and survey tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for quick free forms, polls and quizzes
Google Forms comes free with a Google Account and sends answers to a Google Sheet as they arrive. It sticks to the basics: no payments, signatures or calculated totals, file uploads make respondents sign in to Google, and there's no phone app, only the mobile browser. The business version comes only inside Workspace from $7 per user a month, and Gemini form drafting needs Business Standard or higher.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free with a personal Google Account, in a category where the middle paid plan is $24 a month. There's no standalone paid Forms plan: the business version rides inside Workspace from $7 per user a month, Gmail, Drive and Meet included. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Free with an account you almost certainly have, and the listing shows no cap on forms or responses that a normal person would meet. The only paid extra is Gemini drafting a form for you. |
| Features | C | It covers the basics: drag-and-drop questions, logic that skips sections, quizzes with answer keys, live charts and a linked Sheet. The gaps are plain: no payments, no signatures, no calculations, and file uploads force respondents to sign in to Google. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, and there is nothing to set up: no new account, no plan to pick, no install. Open it, add questions, send the link. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web with Google's own plumbing: Sheets, Drive, Apps Script, AppSheet and a Forms API. No dedicated phone app, though. Google's help pages describe using it in a mobile browser instead. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Google Forms is for
- Fits if you need a quick poll, sign-up sheet or class quiz and don't want to pay
- Works for teams already in Google Workspace who read answers in Sheets
Who it is not for
- Not for you if you want a phone app, as it only runs in the mobile browser
- Skip it if people without a Google Account need to upload files: uploads need a sign-in and don't work on shared-drive forms
- Too light for order forms, since there's nothing here for payments, signatures or calculated totals
- Watch out: the business version comes only inside Workspace from $7 per user a month, and its 14-day trial needs billing details
- Watch out: Gemini's form drafting is desktop-only, can't build multi-section forms and needs Business Standard or higher
Good to know
Good for
- Quick polls, event registrations and quizzes at no cost
- Teams on Google Workspace that analyze responses in Google Sheets
- Teachers building quizzes with answer keys and point values
Worth knowing
- There is no standalone paid Forms plan; the business version comes only inside Google Workspace, with Gmail, Drive and Meet.
- Google's help pages describe using Forms in a mobile web browser on Android, iPhone and iPad; no dedicated mobile app is listed.
- File upload questions require respondents to sign in to a Google Account and cannot be used on forms stored in a shared drive.
- Help me create a form is desktop-only, cannot yet build multi-section forms, and needs Business Standard or higher or a Google AI plan.
Part 02 · Tips
Insider tips
What most people miss: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches
7
Things most people miss, each from its own help pages
The things about Google Forms that are easy to miss until they cost you: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches at renewal or when you leave. Each one is from Google Forms’s own pages, linked beside it.
Read on Oct 17, 2026. Read from Google's Docs Editors Help and Workspace Learning Center pages on publishing forms, managing responses, quizzes, file uploads and keyboard shortcuts on 17 October 2026. Not tried out: these tips are what its own pages say.
- 1
Setting
On a work account, forms only take answers from your organisation
Google's help says Workspace forms are limited to people inside your organisation by default. To let customers or anyone else answer, open Settings, click the arrow next to Responses and turn off Restrict to users in your domain.
support.google.com - 2
Setting
Limit to 1 response makes everyone sign in first
It sounds harmless, but turning on Limit to 1 response under Settings, Responses means every respondent has to sign in to a Google Account before they can answer. That puts off anyone without one, so we'd leave it off for public surveys.
support.google.com - 3
Easy to miss
Send a link with some answers already filled in
Click More (the three dots), then Pre-fill form, type the answers you want filled in and click Get link. Handy for forms you send again and again, like peer reviews where the names and project titles are already there.
support.google.com - 4
Easy to miss
Get an email whenever someone answers
In the Responses tab, click More and choose Get email notifications for new responses. Otherwise you only see new answers when you go and look. Google's help points to the Form notifications add-on if you want more, like custom follow-up emails.
support.google.com - 5
Shortcut
Press Ctrl + / to see every Forms shortcut
That's Cmd + / on a Mac. A few worth learning: Ctrl + Shift + Enter adds a question, Ctrl + Shift + D duplicates one, Ctrl + Shift + K and J move it up and down, and Ctrl + Shift + P previews the form.
support.google.com - 6
Privacy
View results summary shows everyone's answers to every respondent
If you turn on View results summary under Presentation, anyone who can fill in the form can see a summary of all the responses. Fine for a class poll. Not for anything personal.
support.google.com - 7
Leaving
Deleting responses leaves the uploaded files behind
Google's help says deleting responses doesn't delete the files people attached, so clear those out of your Drive too. It also suggests closing the form before you download and delete, so nothing arrives after your export. Each form now holds up to 500,000 responses.

Part 05 · Standing
Where it stands
Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own
30/30
Other form and survey tools it is graded above
Google Forms's GPA of 3.2 is higher than 30 of the 30 other form and survey tools we grade.
It stands best on value for money (A, above 28 of 30) and worst on features (C, above 0).
Its paid plans start at $7 a month for each person, against a middle price of $21 for the category: 2 of the 30 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.7 out of 4, and no tool on the category's chart scores higher without costing more.

Price against what you get
Each dot is one of 31 form and survey tools. Further left costs less; higher up scores better on features, ease of use and platforms. Google Forms is the marked dot.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Google Forms you could make: forms, surveys, templates and reports. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 30 of the 30 other form and survey tools we grade. It costs $84 a year.
What you could make
- Forms, surveys, templates and reports: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Google Sheets, Google Drive and Apps Script among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Google Forms’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
