Best for Yahoo rank checks on a Windows PC

GRC is a Japanese rank checker you install on a Windows PC, with ranking history, notes on the graph and top-site tracking, from ¥495 a month for 500 keywords. Its changelog says Google checks stopped and Bing was removed, so it now checks Yahoo only. It's Windows only, in Japanese, one licence per PC, and a plan can't be changed once its key is issued.

Who GRC is for

  • Fits if you work in Japan and Yahoo rankings are the ones you report on
  • Works for keeping ranking data on your own Windows PC rather than in a web service

Who GRC is not for

  • Skip it if you need Google rankings, as GRC no longer checks them, and Bing was removed
  • Not for you if you're on a Mac or want it in a browser, as it's Windows only
  • Tight if your needs might grow, since a plan can't be changed once its key is issued, and upgrading by paying the difference isn't offered
  • Watch out: each PC or Windows user account needs its own licence, and the site is in Japanese only
  • Watch out: the free edition's item limit isn't stated, and yearly licences are paid by bank transfer

Why GRC gets a 2.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for moneyBasic is ¥495 a month for 5 URLs and 500 keywords, tax included, or ¥4,950 a year. That's a fraction of what rank trackers usually charge, even counting that it now checks Yahoo only.
  • CFree plan and trialA free edition of the same program, with a lower limit on sites and keywords that a paid key raises. The pages read don't say what that limit is.
  • DFeaturesOne-click and scheduled checks, every past position with graphs and notes, competitor and top-site tracking, alerts and CSV export. But it now checks Yahoo only, after Google checks stopped and Bing was removed, so it can't do the job most people want a tracker for.
  • CEase of useNo rating on record. You install it, register sites and keywords and press go, but the site is in Japanese only, and each PC or Windows account needs its own licence.
  • DPlatforms and integrationsWindows only, with no web, Mac or phone version and no integrations. Standard and up can view another PC's GRC data remotely, but that's as far as it reaches.

Your call

You could make the core of GRC for yourself: reports.

What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call.

What you could make

  • Reports: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • Daily checks of where your pages rank in search results.
  • A real app for Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.

What this rests on. GRC’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

What is GRC?

GRC is a Windows desktop rank checker from the Japanese site SEO Tool Lab, distributed since 2004. It checks the positions of many sites and keywords in one run, keeps every past ranking with graphs and notes, and can record the full history of the top sites for a keyword. According to its changelog, Google rank checks were stopped and Bing checks removed after changes on those engines, so it now tracks Yahoo results only.

Worth knowing

  • It now checks Yahoo only: its changelog says Google checks were stopped and Bing checks removed because those engines changed.
  • It runs on Windows only, and each PC or Windows user account needs its own license.
  • The site is in Japanese and prices are in yen; monthly licenses are paid by PayPal, yearly ones by bank transfer.
  • A license plan cannot be changed after the key is issued, and upgrades by paying the difference are not offered.
