Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
3.0
GPA, above 8 of the 13 other website and product analytics tools we grade
Mixpanel is a product analytics tool that records what people do in an app or on a site as events and turns them into funnels, retention charts and user cohorts. It also includes session replay, heatmaps, feature flags and experiments, plus AI summaries and an MCP server. Paid usage is billed per event after the first million each month, and every plan allows unlimited seats.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Mixpanel, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Autocapture helps on web and mobile, but you'll still want a tracking plan, and building good funnels and cohorts takes some learning.
- 1
Best for funnels and retention for apps and sites
Mixpanel is product analytics done properly: funnels, retention and cohorts built from your events, plus replays, heatmaps, feature flags and experiments.
- 2
Paid plans start at $100 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $100 per month for 1.5M events, billed annually ($140 billed monthly).
- 3
There is a free plan
Free forever, no card: unlimited seats, 1M events a month, 10,000 session replays, 1,000 experiment users, 10 feature flags, funnels and retention, 5 saved reports per seat.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Funnels, retention and cohorts
Reports built from tracked events, with autocapture for web and mobile. Saved cohorts, custom properties and unlimited saved reports start on Growth.
- 6
Session replay and heatmaps
Web and mobile replays with console logs and network calls, plus heatmaps and clickmaps. Free includes 10,000 replays a month and Growth 20,000, expandable to 500,000.
- 7
Feature flags and experiments
Feature flags and A/B experiments counted by monthly experiment users: 1,000 on Free and 5,000 on Growth, which can buy up to 100,000.
- 8
A 3.0 GPA, above 8 of 13
That is against the other website and product analytics tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for funnels and retention for apps and sites
Mixpanel is product analytics done properly: funnels, retention and cohorts built from your events, plus replays, heatmaps, feature flags and experiments. Most small products fit in the free 1M events a month. Once you outgrow it, Growth starts at $100 a month on yearly billing, and the bill climbs with every event after that.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | A site with 10,000 visitors a month sits well inside the free 1M events, so the figure is $0, with unlimited seats and 10,000 replays. Outgrow it and Growth is $100 a month for 1.5M events billed yearly ($140 monthly), and $840 at 10M. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Free forever with no card: 1M events, 10,000 replays, 1,000 experiment users and 10 feature flags, with unlimited seats. The pinch is 5 saved reports per seat, and cohorts you can build but not save. |
| Features | B | Funnels, retention, cohorts, replays with console logs, heatmaps, flags, experiments, AI summaries and warehouse connectors. That's the whole product analytics job. Anomaly detection and HIPAA tools are Enterprise only, and group analytics is a paid add-on. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record. Autocapture helps on web and mobile, but you'll still want a tracking plan, and building good funnels and cohorts takes some learning. AI summaries and an MCP server help with the questions. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web only, no desktop or phone app, so it stops at B. It pulls data from BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift and Postgres, and works with Segment, mParticle, Braze, Iterable and Google Ads. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Mixpanel is for
- Great if you want to see where people drop out of sign-up and who comes back
- Handy when lots of people need access, since every plan has unlimited seats
- Good for startups that will stay under 1M events a month for a while
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you just want page counts for a blog or a shop
- Pricey if you outgrow 1M events, at $100 a month for 1.5M and $840 at 10M on yearly billing
- Tight if you stay free and need saved cohorts or more than 5 saved reports each
Good to know
Good for
- Product teams tracking sign-up funnels, retention and feature use
- Startups that stay under 1M events a month
- Teams that want replays and experiments next to their analytics
Worth knowing
- Growth is billed per event after the first 1M a month and tops out at 20M; above that you need Enterprise, priced through sales.
- Anomaly detection, data quality monitoring, HIPAA tools with a BAA and cross-product analysis are Enterprise only.
- Group (account-level) analytics and Data Pipelines exports are paid add-ons on Growth and Enterprise.
- Data is kept 2 years by default on every plan; a custom retention policy needs Enterprise.

Keep it
Nothing Mixpanel does is plain enough to make in a weekend. The 6 things listed below take a company.
It costs $1,200 a year.
What you could not
- A tracking script and a database that counts every visit.
- Recordings of what each visitor did on your pages.
- Splitting visitors between versions and telling you which won.
- It plugs into other products, Segment, mParticle and Snowflake among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Mixpanel’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
