Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.0

GPA, above 0 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade

QuickBooks Time, formerly called TSheets, is Intuit's employee time tracking product. Staff clock in from a phone app, a web browser or a shared kiosk, managers build schedules by job or shift, and approved hours sync to QuickBooks for payroll and invoicing. Pricing combines a monthly base fee with a per-user fee, and the pricing page states that a QuickBooks Online account is required.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about QuickBooks Time, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for staff time clocks that feed QuickBooks payroll

QuickBooks Time, the old TSheets, is a time clock for staff: they clock in on a phone or a shared kiosk, you build the schedule, and approved hours flow into QuickBooks for payroll.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $20 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $20 / month base fee plus $10 per user / month.

  3. 3

    You can try it first

30-day free trial for new subscriptions, no credit card required

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Mobile time clock

Employees clock in and out and sign and submit timesheets in the QuickBooks Workforce app on iPhone, iPad and Android, with GPS location points recorded while on the clock.

  6. 6

    Time kiosk

A shared punch clock for on-site teams that runs on a tablet, desktop or laptop. It is part of both the Premium and Elite plans.

  7. 7

    Scheduling

Managers create schedules by job or by shift, then edit, publish and share them with the team.

  8. 8

    A 2.0 GPA, above 0 of 42

That is against the other time tracking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

Best for staff time clocks that feed QuickBooks payroll

QuickBooks Time, the old TSheets, is a time clock for staff: they clock in on a phone or a shared kiosk, you build the schedule, and approved hours flow into QuickBooks for payroll. It needs a QuickBooks Online account, charges a $20 base fee on top of $10 a user, so one person costs $30 a month, keeps project tracking and mileage for Elite, and has no desktop app.

ToolGPA report cardQuickBooks TimeGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDTime Premium is a $20 monthly base fee plus $10 a user, so one person costs $30 a month against the $6.67 a time tracker typically asks. Elite is $40 plus $12 a user, and you need a QuickBooks Online account on top. New subscriptions get 50% off the base fee for 3 months.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan. New subscriptions get a 30-day free trial and it asks for no credit card, and that's the only way to see it without paying.
FeaturesCClock in and out from the Workforce app with GPS points, a shared kiosk, schedules by job or shift, time off, and hours that sync to payroll. But nothing tracks automatically, project tracking and mileage are Elite only, and none of it runs without a QuickBooks Online account.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record. Clocking in from a phone or a kiosk is easy enough for staff, but somebody sets up the jobs, the schedules and the QuickBooks connection first, and that somebody needs to know QuickBooks.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone, iPad and Android, plus a kiosk that runs on a tablet, desktop or laptop, and Intuit says it works with more than 50 accounting and payroll apps. No Mac or Windows app is listed, so computers use a browser.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who QuickBooks Time is for

  • Fits if your accounting or payroll already runs in QuickBooks Online
  • Works for field crews who clock in from their phones, with GPS points recorded on the clock

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you don't use QuickBooks Online, because an account is required
  • Pricey if you're a small team, with a $20 base fee before the $10 for each user
  • Not for you if you're a freelancer timing client projects, as project tracking is Elite only, at $40 plus $12 a user
  • Watch out: there's no free plan, and the 30-day trial is the only way to see it without paying
  • Too light for desk work, as no Mac or Windows app is listed and nothing tracks automatically

Good to know

Good for

  • Businesses that already run accounting or payroll in QuickBooks
  • Field and mobile crews that clock in from phones with GPS
  • Shift-based teams that need schedules and a shared time clock

Worth knowing

  • The pricing page states that a QuickBooks Online account is required to use QuickBooks Time.
  • There is no free plan, and both plans charge a monthly base fee on top of the per-user fee.
  • Mileage tracking, project tracking and timesheet signatures are limited to Time Elite.
  • No Mac or Windows desktop app is listed; computers use a web browser or the time kiosk.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A time tracker at its plainest is a start button, a stop button and a table of hours.

You could make the core of QuickBooks Time for yourself: time tracking, reports and invoicing. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. It costs $240 a year.

What you could make

  • Time tracking, reports and invoicing: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.

What this rests on. QuickBooks Time’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
