Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 16 of the 19 other business phone systems we grade

Quo, formerly called OpenPhone, is a business phone app that gives each user a local or toll-free number for calls and texts from a phone or computer. Teammates can share a number with one call and text history, internal threads and shared contacts. Its AI agent Sona answers calls around the clock, and higher plans add AI call summaries, phone menus and CRM integrations.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Quo, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Lots of people use it, and most seem to get on with it fine.

Who Quo is for

  • Great if you want a work number on your own phone, apart from your personal one
  • Handy when a few people share one sales or support line and need the same history
  • A treat if you like plugging your phone line into ChatGPT or Claude

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're on Starter and want a phone menu or call transfers, as those need Business
  • Not for you if you call abroad a lot, since calls outside the US and Canada are billed per minute
  • Pricey if Sona answers lots of calls, as each one past the plan's credits costs $0.45 to $1.00

Good to know

Good for

  • Small businesses that want a second number apart from personal phones
  • Teams sharing one number for sales or support texts and calls
  • Owners who want an AI agent to pick up missed calls

Worth knowing

  • Texting US numbers requires carrier registration (TCR): a one-time $19.50 review fee plus $1.50 to $3 a month.
  • On Starter, calls are recorded manually only, and phone menus, transfers and CRM integrations need Business or Scale.
  • Each extra number costs $5 a month; calls and texts outside the US and Canada are billed per minute or per message.
  • Sona calls beyond the plan's credits cost $0.45 to $1.00 each, depending on the credit tier.

Quo's GPA of 2.8 is higher than 16 of the 19 other business phone systems we grade, and level with 1.

It stands best on platforms and integrations (A, above 9 of 19) and worst on value for money (C, above 3).

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Quo you would be making phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 16 of the 19 other business phone systems we grade. It costs $180 a year.

What you could not

  • Phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network.
  • One mailbox that several people work at once.
  • An AI model answering your customers from your own help articles.
  • Texts from a business number, registered with the carriers.
  • Speech turned into text you can trust.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, HubSpot, Salesforce and Pipedrive among them, and has an API.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Quo’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
