Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.6

GPA, above 12 of the 13 other spend and bill pay tools we grade

Ramp combines corporate cards with expense management, travel booking, bill pay, invoicing and a business checking account. Receipts are collected by text or Slack and matched to card spend, bills are read by OCR and paid by ACH, card, check or wire, and everything syncs to the accounting system. The Free plan covers most of this; Plus adds AI review and coding, deeper ERP sync and multi-entity support.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Ramp, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The catches: the card needs credit approval, and Plus has a platform fee the pricing page doesn't state.

The report card

Best for cards, expenses and bill pay at no cost

Ramp puts corporate cards, expenses, travel booking, bill pay, invoicing and a business checking account in one place, and its Free plan covers most of it. Receipts come in by text or Slack, and bills go out by ACH, card, check or wire. The catches: the card needs credit approval, and Plus has a platform fee the pricing page doesn't state.

Value for moneyAFree and substantial. A ten-person company pays $0 a month on Ramp Free for cards, expenses, travel and bill pay, and the listing gives no fee for ACH bill payments, with same-day ACH free too. Plus is $15 a user, 20% less yearly, plus an unstated platform fee.
Free plan and trialAThe Free plan has no user cap on record and covers unlimited cards, receipts by text or Slack, travel booking, bill pay, invoicing, a checking account and QuickBooks or Xero sync. Plus has a 30-day trial.
FeaturesBThe whole job: cards with controls, expenses and reimbursements, travel, bills read by OCR and routed for approval, invoicing and accounting sync. Purchase orders and three-way matching are an add-on, which mostly bigger finance teams will miss.
Ease of useA4.91 from 47,070 App Store ratings, the top band. Staff can finish an expense by replying to a text, which is about as little effort as it gets.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone and Android, with QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Dynamics 365, Workday, Slack and Amazon Business. No desktop app is listed, and Workday sync needs Enterprise.
Grade point averageExcellent, out of 4.03.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Ramp is for

  • Great if you want cards, receipts and bill pay in one place without a subscription
  • Handy when staff hate expense reports, since they can just reply to a text
  • Good for US companies that book travel and want it tied to card spend

Who it is not for

  • Not for you if your company can't get credit approval for the card
  • Skip it if you need purchase orders without paying for an add-on
  • Tight if you'll outgrow Free soon, as Plus has a platform fee on top of $15 a user that isn't published

Good to know

Good for

  • US companies that want cards, expenses and bill pay in one free tool
  • Finance teams closing books in NetSuite or Sage Intacct
  • Businesses that book company travel and want it tied to card spend

Worth knowing

  • Plus adds a platform fee based on team size that the pricing page does not state; Enterprise is quoted and billed yearly.
  • Ramp says it is not a bank: checking deposits are held at First Internet Bank of Indiana, and its corporate card is issued by Celtic Bank and needs credit approval.
  • Purchase orders and three-way matching come as an add-on to Plus or Enterprise; Workday and Oracle Fusion sync need Enterprise.
  • Cards are issued in the US, Canada, the UK and the EEA. Filing 1099s costs $0.65 per IRS form, with state filing free.

Part 04 · Standing

Where it stands

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

12/13

Other spend and bill pay tools it is graded above

Ramp's GPA of 3.6 is higher than 12 of the 13 other spend and bill pay tools we grade, and level with 1.

It stands best on free plan and trial (A, above 11 of 13) and worst on platforms and integrations (B, above 0).

Its paid plans start at $15 a month for each person, against a middle price of $12 for the category: 7 of the 11 others that charge start lower.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 3.3 out of 4. Nothing scores higher for less, though at least one tool matches that score at a lower price.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Ramp you would be making cards issued through a bank. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.6 is higher than 12 of the 13 other spend and bill pay tools we grade. It costs $180 a year.

What you could make

  • Expense tracking, invoicing and reports: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Cards issued through a bank.
  • Money moved between bank accounts, which takes a licensed payments partner.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, QuickBooks Online, Xero and NetSuite among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Ramp’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
