Best for small firms whose main job is billing time

Rocket Matter is built around time, billing and trust accounting, with payments, document assembly, conflict checks and a client portal on every plan. But its $59 a user a month entry price is the highest published in this category and is paid yearly only, Essentials caps storage at 25 GB with no eSignatures, and full accounting waits for Elite at $145.

Who Rocket Matter is for

  • Fits if your firm's main need is time capture and billing
  • Works for firms that want document assembly, conflict checks and a client portal on the entry plan

Who Rocket Matter is not for

  • Pricey if you'd rather pay monthly: prices are yearly only, and Essentials at $59 a user is the dearest published start here
  • Tight if you're on Essentials: 25 GB of documents, and no eSignatures, LEDES billing, matter templates or Google Calendar sync
  • Watch out: built-in business accounting is Elite only at $145 a user, and then the QuickBooks Online link can't be used
  • Watch out: the Legal CRM add-on, for Pro and Premier only, is $39 a user billed yearly plus a $399 setup fee, with a 3-user minimum
  • Watch out: eSignatures start on Pro with a monthly allowance per user, and extra envelopes are $2 each

Why Rocket Matter gets a 2.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • DValue for moneyEssentials is $59 a user a month paid yearly, the dearest published starting price here: the category's middle is $49 and its dearest tenth starts at $59. The pricing page shows no monthly rate, and Pro is $95.
  • CFree plan and trialA 10-day trial with no card, and no free plan after it.
  • CFeaturesTime and expenses, batch and retainer billing, trust accounting, payments, document assembly, conflict checks and a client portal on every plan. The gap the listing shows: intake only comes through the Legal CRM add-on, which isn't sold for Essentials or Elite.
  • CEase of useWe have no store rating on file for it. It's a full billing and trust system to set up, and the matter templates and workflows that save repeat setup start on Pro.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsWeb, iPhone and Android, with QuickBooks Online, Outlook, Google Calendar, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, NetDocuments and Zapier. The listing has no desktop app beyond a time tracker.

Keep Rocket Matter, or make your own?

Keep it

To replace Rocket Matter you would be making client trust accounts kept the way bar rules require. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 4 of the 9 other law practice software grade higher. It costs $708 a year.

What you could make

  • Case management, time tracking and invoicing: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Client trust accounts kept the way bar rules require.
  • Live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, QuickBooks Online, Microsoft Outlook and Google Calendar among them.

What this rests on. Rocket Matter’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
