Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 44 of the 74 other calendar and scheduling apps we grade
Setmore is appointment scheduling software for service businesses such as salons, clinics, trainers and consultants. Customers book and pay through a branded Booking Page, and staff manage their calendars from the web, desktop or mobile apps. The Free plan covers up to 4 users with unlimited appointments; Pro is priced per user and adds two-way calendar sync, text reminders, recurring appointments and API access.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Setmore, taken from its own pages and our grades.
If you need a waitlist or intake forms, look elsewhere.
- 1
Best for small teams that want free online booking
Free leaves out text reminders, two-way calendar sync, recurring appointments and deposits.
- 2
Paid plans start at $5 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $5 per user / month, billed annually ($12 billed monthly).
- 3
There is a free plan
Up to 4 users, unlimited appointments, a Booking Page, online and in-person payments, email confirmations and one email reminder, plus the mobile and desktop apps.
- 4
It runs on 5 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.
- 5
Booking Page
A public page with a custom URL that lists services, staff and live availability so customers can book at any hour. Removing Setmore's branding from it needs Pro.
- 6
Payments
Take card payments at booking or in person through Square, Stripe, PayPal or LawPay, including Tap to Pay, on both plans. Deposits are a Pro feature.
- 7
Confirmations and reminders
Email confirmations and one email reminder are free. Pro adds a second reminder and SMS reminders, with 500 SMS credits per Pro team member each month.
- 8
A 2.8 GPA, above 44 of 74
That is against the other calendar and scheduling apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for small teams that want free online booking
Setmore is appointment booking for salons, clinics and studios, with a free plan for 4 staff and unlimited appointments. Free leaves out text reminders, two-way calendar sync, recurring appointments and deposits. Pro is $5 a user a month yearly or $12 monthly, every staff calendar counts as a user, and there's no trial. If you need a waitlist or intake forms, look elsewhere.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $5 a person a month on yearly billing, just under the $6 middle for calendar tools, and $12 if you pay monthly. It's per staff calendar, so a six-chair salon is $30 a month on yearly billing. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Four staff, unlimited appointments, a booking page, card payments, group classes and one email reminder, with no time limit. The caps you'd meet: 4 users, no text reminders and no two-way sync. |
| Features | C | A booking page, payments, classes, team calendars, reminders and Book Now buttons for Instagram, Facebook and Google. The listing's own gaps show: no waitlist or intake forms, and recurring and video appointments, deposits and the API all need Pro. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.67 from about 9,200 App Store ratings, a shade under our bar for an A. Setmore says help runs around the clock by chat, email and phone. One reviewer says the app shows less than the website. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, which few others in this category cover. More than 40 integrations plus Zapier, and an API on Pro only. Two-way sync with Google or Office 365 is Pro only too. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Setmore is for
- Fits if you run a salon, clinic or studio with up to 4 staff and email reminders are enough
- Works for taking payment at booking through Square, Stripe or PayPal, which is on both plans
Who it is not for
- Skip it if your diary is in Google Calendar and you won't pay, as two-way sync is Pro only
- Tight if you stay on Free: 4 users, one email reminder, and no texts, recurring or video appointments, deposits or API
- Pricey if you pay monthly: $12 for every staff calendar, even ones with no login, against $5 on yearly billing
- Watch out: there's no Pro trial, only a 30-day refund, and Live Receptionist is $99 a month extra, US only
- Not for you if you need a waitlist, intake forms or cards on file, which aren't on its features page
Good to know
Good for
- Small service businesses that want free booking for up to four staff
- Taking payment at the time of booking or in person
- Getting booked from Instagram, Facebook and Google listings
Worth knowing
- The Free plan stops at 4 users and leaves out two-way calendar sync, SMS reminders, recurring appointments, video appointments, deposits and API access.
- Pro is charged per user, and every staff calendar counts as a user even if that person has no login.
- Paying monthly costs $12 per user, more than twice the $5 annual rate. There is no free trial of Pro, only a 30-day refund window.
- Live Receptionist call answering is a separate $99 per month add-on and is offered in the US only.

Keep it, or make your own?

Keep it
The plain part of Setmore you could make: reports. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $60 a year.
What you could make
- Reports: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Booking pages that read and write other people's calendars and send the emails.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Google Calendar, Office 365 Calendar and Zoom among them, and has an API.
What this rests on. Setmore’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
