Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 6 of the 30 other form and survey tools we grade
SurveyMonkey is an online platform for surveys, forms and quizzes, with a template library, AI-assisted survey building and analysis tools such as statistical significance and crosstabs. Individual plans cover one person, and team plans are priced per user with a three-seat minimum. Every paid plan has a response allowance with a per-response charge beyond it, and responses from the SurveyMonkey Audience panel are sold separately.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about SurveyMonkey, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Describe what the survey is for and Build with AI hands you a draft to edit.
- 1
Best for surveys where the analysis matters as much as the asking
SurveyMonkey is a survey tool with the analysis built in: statistical significance, crosstabs and AI summaries.
- 2
Paid plans start at $39 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $39 per month, billed annually ($468), for one user.
- 3
There is a free plan
Basic plan: 1 user, unlimited surveys, 10 questions per survey and a limited number of viewable responses per survey. The exact response number is shown only after sign-up.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 5
Build with AI
Type a prompt that describes the goals of a survey and SurveyMonkey generates a draft to edit and customize. It is listed on the free Basic plan.
- 6
Logic and survey controls
Skip logic starts on Standard Monthly. Advanced logic, block randomization and multilingual surveys are reserved for the Premier tiers.
- 7
Analyze with AI and Thematic Analysis
Ask a question to get AI-generated charts and insight summaries, and have open-ended answers grouped into themes. Both start on the Advantage tier.
- 8

The report card
Best for surveys where the analysis matters as much as the asking
SurveyMonkey is a survey tool with the analysis built in: statistical significance, crosstabs and AI summaries. It gets expensive fast. The cheapest annual plan is $39 a month, the only month-to-month plan is $149, every paid plan caps responses and charges $0.15 for each one over, and the free plan stops at 10 questions a survey with only some responses viewable.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | The cheapest yearly plan is $39 a month, and the parts people come for sit far above this category's $24 middle: crosstabs, advanced logic and multilingual surveys on Premier at $139. Month-to-month means Standard at $149, and extra responses are $0.15 each. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Basic is free with unlimited surveys and Build with AI, but 10 questions per survey is a wall you'll meet at once, and only some of your responses are viewable. How many? SurveyMonkey only says after you sign up. |
| Features | B | It covers the whole survey job, analysis included: statistical significance, multi-survey analysis, crosstabs and AI that groups open answers into themes, with shared brand assets and roles for teams. Advanced logic and multilingual surveys are Premier-only. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.57 from about 2,800 App Store ratings, which clears a B but not the 4.7 a top mark wants. Describe what the survey is for and Build with AI hands you a draft to edit. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web plus free iPhone and Android apps that create, send and analyze surveys, with Slack, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Teams and Zapier wired in. No desktop app, and Salesforce, Power BI and Tableau are Enterprise only. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who SurveyMonkey is for
- Fits if you run customer, employee or market research and need statistics on the answers
- Works for a one-off project on the month-to-month Standard plan, at $149 for the month
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you only need a simple form, at $39 a month billed annually ($468) for the cheapest yearly plan
- Pricey if you want crosstabs, advanced logic or multilingual surveys, since all wait for Premier at $139 a month
- Tight if you stay free: 10 questions per survey, and the number of viewable responses is only shown after sign-up
- Watch out: paid plans cap responses (1,000 a month on Standard, 15,000 a year on Advantage) and charge $0.15 for each extra
- Skip it if you're a team of two, as Team plans need 3 users, and Salesforce, Power BI, Tableau and SSO need Enterprise at 5 or more
Good to know
Good for
- Customer, employee and market research surveys that need statistical analysis
- Teams that share templates, themes and roles across several survey creators
- One-off projects, using the month-to-month Standard plan
Worth knowing
- The free Basic plan allows 10 questions per survey and shows only a limited number of responses per survey.
- Standard Monthly is the only plan billed month to month; the Advantage, Premier and Team plans are billed annually.
- Team plans need at least 3 users. SSO and the Salesforce, Marketo, Power BI and Tableau integrations are Enterprise-only, and Enterprise needs 5 or more users and a demo.
- Paid plans cap responses (1,000 a month on Standard, 15,000 a year on Advantage) and charge $0.15 per extra response.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of SurveyMonkey you could make: surveys, forms, templates and reports. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 12 of the 30 other form and survey tools grade higher. It costs $468 a year.
What you could make
- Surveys, forms, templates and reports: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Slack, HubSpot and Mailchimp among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. SurveyMonkey’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
