Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 7 of the 15 other remote desktop apps we grade
TeamViewer Remote lets you control a computer from another device to fix a problem or reach your files, with apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and ChromeOS and a web app. It is mainly for IT and help desk support of other people's computers, sold as yearly licences by the number of unattended devices and users. The free version is for personal use only, such as helping family or reaching your own PC.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about TeamViewer, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The person at the other end accepts and you're in, so there's not much to learn.
- 1
Best for helping family for free, or paid IT support
TeamViewer is the name most people know: free for helping your mum or reaching your own PC, with apps for every computer and phone and ties to ServiceNow, Jira and Intune.
- 2
Paid plans start at $51.67 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $619.99 per year (Business, as an in-app purchase on the US App Store).
- 3
There is a free plan
Free for personal use only: helping friends and family and reaching your own devices. Commercial use needs a paid licence.
- 4
It runs on 6 platforms
Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android.
- 5
Attended and unattended access
Connect to any number of devices when someone at the other end accepts, or to a set number of managed devices without anyone present, depending on the licence.
- 6
File transfer and remote printing
Send and queue files between devices and print documents from the remote computer to your local printer.
- 7
Wake-on-LAN and black screen
Power on a remote computer, block local keyboard and mouse input, and black out its screen while you work on it.
- 8
A 2.6 GPA, above 7 of 15
That is against the other remote desktop apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace TeamViewer you would be making a fast, secure link to another computer through any network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for helping family for free, or paid IT support
TeamViewer is the name most people know: free for helping your mum or reaching your own PC, with apps for every computer and phone and ties to ServiceNow, Jira and Intune. Work use is another story. The only dollar price we could read is Business at $619.99 a year for one user, and phones need a paid add-on.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | $619.99 a year for Business, one licensed user and up to 200 managed devices, is the only dollar price on record: it's the in-app purchase on the US App Store. For one technician doing the same job, Zoho Assist, Splashtop and LogMeIn Resolve's Starter all cost less. Its other plans couldn't be read in dollars. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Free for personal use, with no cap on record for helping friends and family or reaching your own computers, phones and tablets. That's a plan one person can live on. Any work use needs a licence, which you can trial for 14 days. |
| Features | C | Attended and unattended access, file transfer, remote printing, Wake-on-LAN, black screen, session recording and AI summaries. The gaps it lists itself: phones and tablets need a paid add-on, iPhones and iPads only share their screen, and Business allows one connection at a time. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.67 from 44,790 App Store ratings, just short of our A line. The person at the other end accepts and you're in, so there's not much to learn. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, with an API and connections to Intune, ServiceNow, Jira, Salesforce, Zendesk, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. That's everything we look for. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who TeamViewer is for
- Great if you're the one the family calls when the computer plays up
- Handy when your help desk already lives in ServiceNow, Jira or Intune
- Good for a small business with up to 200 machines to look after unattended
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you're a one-person IT shop, as Business is $619.99 a year
- Skip it if you need to control iPhones or iPads, which only share their screen
- Not for you if your use is really work and you want it free, as the free version is personal only
Good to know
Good for
- Helping friends and family with computer problems at no cost
- IT staff and help desks supporting employees' or customers' computers
- Small businesses that need unattended access to up to 200 devices
- Organizations that connect remote support to ServiceNow, Jira or Intune
Worth knowing
- TeamViewer's website shows prices by visitor location and could not be read in US dollars; Remote Access, Premium and Corporate prices are missing here.
- The free version is for personal use only; any business or work use needs a paid licence, which TeamViewer offers to trial for 14 days.
- Licences are billed yearly and cap the number of managed devices and simultaneous connections, e.g. one connection at a time on Business.
- Supporting phones and tablets is a paid add-on; for iPhones and iPads it is screen sharing rather than control.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace TeamViewer you would be making a fast, secure link to another computer through any network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $619.99 a year.
What you could not
- A fast, secure link to another computer through any network.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, Microsoft Intune, ServiceNow and Freshworks among them, and has an API.
- End-to-end encryption done properly.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
What this rests on. TeamViewer’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
