Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 16 of the 30 other website and landing page builders we grade
Webflow is a visual website builder in which pages are designed on a canvas that maps to real HTML and CSS, then published to Webflow's hosting. Each site is bought on its own site plan, from a free Starter site to Basic and Premium, with the CMS, site search and higher bandwidth on Premium. Workspace plans, billed separately, add staging sites, custom code and team permissions, and ecommerce is a further set of site plans.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Webflow, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Expect a learning curve before you're quick.
- 1
Best for designers who want control over every layout
Webflow is for people who think in layouts: you design on a canvas that writes real HTML and CSS, with a proper CMS behind it.
- 2
Paid plans start at $15 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $15 per site / month, billed yearly ($25 billed monthly).
- 3
There is a free plan
Starter site: a webflow.io address, 2 static pages, 50 CMS items, 1 GB of bandwidth and 50 form submissions. A custom domain needs a paid site plan.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Visual designer
Pages are laid out on a canvas that writes standards-based code, with code components available on Premium for developer-built or AI-generated parts.
- 6
Webflow CMS
Collections hold blog posts, listings and other structured content with templates for each item. Premium allows 20,000 items in 40 collections; Basic has no CMS.
- 7
Hosting on a global CDN
Sites publish to Webflow hosting behind Cloudflare's CDN with free SSL. Bandwidth runs from 1 GB on Starter to 50 GB on Premium, with paid steps above that.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 16 of 30
That is against the other website and landing page builders we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Webflow you would be making a builder that other people can use without writing code. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for designers who want control over every layout
Webflow is for people who think in layouts: you design on a canvas that writes real HTML and CSS, with a proper CMS behind it. A simple business site is $15 a month on yearly billing. But a blog needs Premium at $25, selling needs a separate store plan, and it asks more of you than a template builder.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Basic is $15 a month for one site on yearly billing ($25 monthly), right at this category's middle. That's a site with no CMS. A blog or anything built from collections needs Premium at $25, and selling needs an ecommerce plan from $29. |
| Free plan and trial | C | The free Starter site is real but tiny: a webflow.io address, 2 static pages, 50 form submissions and 1 GB of bandwidth. Good for learning the tool, not for running a business. |
| Features | B | A visual designer that writes standards-based code, a CMS with 20,000 items on Premium, hosting on Cloudflare's CDN, staging, real-time co-editing, AI and an MCP server. It covers the whole job; selling is a separate plan, not a gap. |
| Ease of use | C | No app store rating on record, and this is a designer's tool: you lay pages out on a canvas of boxes and styles rather than dropping words into a template. Expect a learning curve before you're quick. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web only, but it connects to Figma, HubSpot, Salesforce, Google Analytics 4, Mailchimp and Stripe, and REST APIs manage CMS content from outside. No desktop or phone app. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Webflow is for
- Great if you're a designer who wants control over every margin without hand-coding
- Handy when your site runs on lots of structured content, like listings or case studies
- Good for teams that want staging sites, comment-only links and real-time co-editing
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you just want to pick a template and type, since there's more to learn here
- Pricey if you need a blog, as the CMS starts on Premium at $25 a month
- Tight if you need quick help, as support is by email with a 48-hour reply target
Good to know
Good for
- Designers and agencies building custom marketing sites without hand-coding
- Content-heavy sites that need a structured CMS and an API
- Teams that want staging, roles and publishing permissions
Worth knowing
- Workspace plans are billed on top of site plans: Core is $19 and Growth $49 a month billed yearly ($28 and $60 monthly) for more staging, custom code and code export.
- Basic has no CMS, so a blog or any collection-driven pages need Premium or higher.
- Selling online needs a separate ecommerce site plan, and Standard takes a 2% fee on top of Stripe or PayPal fees.
- Support is by email with a stated 48-hour reply target; cancelling still leaves the rest of the paid term to pay.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Webflow you would be making a builder that other people can use without writing code. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $180 a year.
What you could make
- Forms: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A builder that other people can use without writing code.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- It plugs into other products, Figma, HubSpot and Salesforce among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Webflow’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
