3.4

GPA, above 11 of the 11 other inventory management tools we grade

Zoho Inventory is online inventory and order management software from Zoho for small businesses that sell through marketplaces, online stores and wholesale. It tracks stock across warehouses, runs sales and purchase orders, prints shipping labels and syncs with Amazon, eBay, Etsy and Shopify. Plans are priced by orders a month, users and locations, and there is a free plan for up to 50 orders a month.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Zoho Inventory, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The catch is that barcodes, stock counts and batch tracking start on Premium.

The report card

Best for small online sellers on a budget

Zoho Inventory is the cheap, capable pick for a small business selling in a shop and online: Standard is $29 a month billed yearly for 500 orders, 3 users, 2 locations and a Shopify store. It syncs with Amazon, eBay, Etsy and Shopify and prints shipping labels. The catch is that barcodes, stock counts and batch tracking start on Premium.

Value for moneyAStandard covers a shop plus an online store at $29 a month billed yearly ($39 monthly): 500 orders a month, 3 users, 2 locations and 1 Shopify store. That's well under what this category usually charges, though barcodes and stock counts need Premium at $79.
Free plan and trialCFree for 50 orders a month, 1 user and 1 location, with composite items, dropshipping and one Shopify store. Fine for a side hustle, but a shop and an online store will pass 50 orders a month quickly, and there are no barcodes.
FeaturesBMarketplace and store sync, several warehouses with bins, sales and purchase orders, backorders, dropshipping, shipping labels, and barcodes with serial and batch tracking. That's the whole job, though barcodes, stock counts and batches start on Premium.
Ease of useA4.75 from 1,029 App Store ratings, just into the top band. It also works with Zoho Books and Zoho CRM if you already use them.
Platforms and integrationsAWeb, Windows, iPhone and Android, with Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Etsy, Shopify, WooCommerce, Zoho Books, QuickBooks Online, Xero and carriers like UPS, USPS and FedEx. That's the full spread.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Zoho Inventory is for

  • Great if you sell on Amazon, eBay, Etsy or Shopify and want stock kept in sync cheaply
  • Handy when you already run Zoho Books or Zoho CRM
  • Good for tiny shops that want to start on a free plan

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you need barcodes or stock counts, which start on Premium at $79 a month
  • Not for you if you make products from raw materials, as there are composite items but no production planning
  • Skip it if you run several Shopify stores and want Standard's price, as it connects just one

Good to know

Good for

  • Small online sellers on Amazon, eBay, Etsy or Shopify
  • Businesses already using Zoho Books or Zoho CRM
  • Very small shops that want a free plan to start

Worth knowing

  • Each plan caps orders a month, users and locations; more users or 500 extra orders cost $7.50 a month each billed annually ($9 monthly).
  • Extra locations cost $10 a month billed annually ($12 monthly), and advanced warehousing is $124.17 a month billed annually.
  • Barcodes, stock counts and serial and batch tracking start on Premium; Standard has none of them.
  • The Free and Standard plans connect only one Shopify store; Premium and higher allow up to five.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Zoho Inventory you would be making discounted carrier rates and labels, which take an agreement with each carrier. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.4 is higher than 11 of the 11 other inventory management tools we grade. It costs $348 a year.

What you could make

  • Inventory: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • Discounted carrier rates and labels, which take an agreement with each carrier.
  • Checkout, card payments and sales tax handled for you.
  • Scanning barcodes with a phone camera or a scanner.
  • Apps for Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Amazon, eBay and Etsy among them.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Zoho Inventory’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
