How we grade them

Value for money
BPremium is $4.99 a month billed annually, about the going rate for a paid to-do app. Teams costs the same per member and Family is $8.33 a month for 4 people. Pay month by month and Premium jumps to $7.99.
AThe core app costs nothing, so there's little to weigh. The optional SuperHero tier shows on the US App Store as purchases from $0.99 to $53.99, with no billing periods given. It adds lock-screen SuperAlerts and 5% cash back on Instacart orders. Extras, not the main event.
Free plan and trial
BThe Personal plan is free for good, with tasks, lists, reminders, the calendar, the daily planner and sync. But recurring tasks, colour tags and location reminders are left out, and a to-do list without repeats gets tight fast.
AThe vendor's FAQ says the core features are free with no ads or paywalls: calendar sync, to-dos, habits, notes, grocery lists, weather and sharing with a partner or family. Most people would never need to pay.
Features
ATasks and calendar events side by side, a planner that asks what you'll get done today, and tasks made inside WhatsApp. Families get a grocery list grouped by aisle. Teams get boards with kanban, table and Gantt views, automations and 100+ templates.
AOne feed for events, to-dos, habits and notes, two-way sync with Google, Apple and Outlook calendars, alerts that play through Silent mode, habits a friend can be told you missed, and tasks made from a spoken phrase or a photo of a whiteboard. Grocery lists sort by aisle.
Ease of use
A4.6 from about 50,500 App Store ratings. The personal app is lists, reminders and a calendar in one place, kept in step between phone, desktop and web.
A4.9 from about 5,100 App Store ratings, which is about as high as they go. You can say "dentist Thursday at 3" and it becomes an event, so there's very little form-filling.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and a browser extension. It connects to WhatsApp, Google Calendar, Gmail, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Zapier. No Linux app is listed.
CiPhone and Android, and that's it. The App Store listing is marked as only for iPhone, and no web, Mac or Windows version is mentioned. The FAQ says Android isn't at feature parity with iOS yet. It does sync with Google, Apple and Outlook calendars.

Key features

Any.do

Tasks, lists and reminders
Personal to-do lists with reminders are free. Recurring tasks, location reminders and color tags are listed under Premium.
Calendar and daily planner
Calendar events and tasks are shown together, and a daily planner asks what you intend to get done today.
WhatsApp tasks and reminders
Tasks can be created and reminders received inside WhatsApp. WhatsApp reminders are a Premium feature.
Family space
The Family plan gives up to 4 members a shared space for family projects, task assignment and a grocery list that groups items by aisle.
Team boards and views
The Teams workspace has project boards with kanban, calendar, table and Gantt views, custom fields and time tracking.
Automations and templates
In the Teams workspace, automations can assign tasks, set due dates and update statuses, and more than 100 workflow templates are provided.

Hero Assistant

One daily feed
To-dos, calendar events, notes, habits, a morning Daily Brief and the weather forecast appear together in a single feed instead of separate apps.
Two-way calendar sync
Connects Google Calendar, Apple Calendar (iCloud) and Outlook in real time, so changes made in Hero go back to the source calendar and the reverse.
Can't Miss alerts
A to-do, habit or event marked as Can't Miss raises a critical alert that plays through Silent mode and Do Not Disturb and stays until it is acted on.
Habits with shared accountability
Habits can repeat hourly, daily, weekly or monthly. A shared link lets friends or family opt in to be notified when a habit is missed.
Capture by voice or photo
A spoken phrase with a day and time becomes a structured task or event, and photos of handwriting, whiteboards or screenshots are turned into notes, tasks or events.
Grocery lists with Instacart ordering
Items are grouped by aisle as they are added, and the list can be ordered through Instacart. SuperHero users get 5% cash back on those orders.
