Best for rankings, backlinks and page changes watched in one tool

SEOwl is a French web tool that checks rankings daily, crawls backlinks daily to see they're live and followed, and watches chosen pages hourly for SEO changes. There's no free plan; plans start at $25 a month for 250 keywords. Its pages don't say which search engines it tracks, white label starts at $65, the pricing footer reads 2022, and the blog stopped in December 2024.

Who SEOwl is for

  • Fits if you build links and need to know when a backlink drops or turns nofollow
  • Works for freelancers watching many small sites, since websites are unlimited on every plan

Who SEOwl is not for

  • Skip it if you need Bing, YouTube or AI answers tracked, as its pricing page doesn't name the engines it tracks
  • Tight if you want white-label reports, which start at Pro for $65 a month; unlimited users wait on Agency at $139
  • Not for you if you want signs of regular updates, as its blog stopped in December 2024 and its footer reads 2022
  • Watch out: there's no free plan, only a 7-day trial before $25 a month
  • Watch out: saved results pages are kept for 30 days only

Why SEOwl gets a 2.2

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • CValue for moneySolo 250 is $25 a month for 250 daily keywords, 2,500 monitored backlinks and 250 watched pages, with two months free on yearly billing. That's in the middle of what rank trackers charge, with backlink and page checks in the same plan.
  • CFree plan and trialNo free plan, but a 7-day trial with no card needed. A few free stand-alone tools, like a bulk rank checker, sit on the site too.
  • CFeaturesDaily desktop and mobile rankings, local or national, on-demand refreshes, 30 days of saved results pages with a diff, daily backlink checks and hourly page monitoring. The gap: its pricing page doesn't name which search engines it tracks.
  • CEase of useNo rating on record. You add sites, keywords, backlinks and pages to watch, then set alerts and build reports in a drag-and-drop designer.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsWeb only, with no desktop or phone app. It links to Google Analytics, Search Console, Data Studio, Slack, DomDetailer and Zapier, and has an API.

Keep SEOwl, or make your own?

Keep it

To replace SEOwl you would be making an index of the links between billions of web pages. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 17 of the 39 other rank trackers grade higher. It costs $300 a year.

What you could make

  • Reports: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • An index of the links between billions of web pages.
  • Daily checks of where your pages rank in search results.
  • A crawler that checks every page of a site.
  • It plugs into other products, Google Analytics, Google Search Console and Google Data Studio among them, and has an API.

What this rests on. SEOwl’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
