Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.2

GPA, above 39 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade

TrackingTime is a time tracker aimed at agencies and professional services firms that bill for hours. It pairs timers and timesheets with task and project management, then builds client reports, approvals, time cards, time off, retainers and invoices from the same entries. The Free plan covers unlimited users, tasks and projects, and most reporting, billing and approval features sit on the paid plans.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about TrackingTime, taken from its own pages and our grades.

But the Free plan can't mark hours billable, export a spreadsheet or use dashboards, invoicing waits for Pro, and there's no Linux app.
From our report card of TrackingTime
  1. 1

Best for a free timer with no seat limit

TrackingTime mixes time tracking with task and project management, and its free plan covers unlimited users, tasks and projects.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $4.50 a month for each person

As its pricing page puts it: $4.50 per user / month, billed annually ($6 billed monthly).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Unlimited users, tasks, projects and clients, timers and manual entry, desktop, mobile and browser apps, and PDF export. No billable hours, CSV or Excel export, dashboards or AutoTrack.

  4. 4

    It runs on 5 platforms

Web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.

  5. 5

    Timers inside other apps

Time is tracked with a live timer or entered by hand on web, desktop and mobile. Browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge add a timer to tools such as Asana and Jira.

  6. 6

    AutoTrack

From the Starter plan, AutoTrack detects activity and suggests time logs. The raw data stays with the team member, who decides what is submitted.

  7. 7

    Tasks and projects

Every plan includes tasks, subtasks, to-dos, estimates, deadlines and comments. Board, timeline and notes project views and file attachments start on Starter.

  8. 8

    A 3.2 GPA, above 39 of 42

That is against the other time tracking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card

Best for a free timer with no seat limit

TrackingTime mixes time tracking with task and project management, and its free plan covers unlimited users, tasks and projects. Paid plans run from $4.50 to $10 a user and add client reports, invoicing, approvals and time off. But the Free plan can't mark hours billable, export a spreadsheet or use dashboards, invoicing waits for Pro, and there's no Linux app.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBStarter is $4.50 a user a month billed annually, $6 monthly, which puts it in the cheaper quarter of the category, and it adds billable hours, client reports and AutoTrack. Pro, with invoicing, approvals and time off, is $6.50. Business is $10.
Free plan and trialAUnlimited users, tasks, projects and clients, with timers, manual entry, the desktop, mobile and browser apps and PDF export. A whole team can track for nothing. The sting: you can't mark hours billable, export a spreadsheet or use dashboards.
FeaturesBA live timer or manual entry, and tasks with subtasks, estimates and deadlines on every plan. Paid plans add AutoTrack suggesting time logs, client reports, hourly and fixed rates, retainers with burn alerts, invoicing, approvals and time off. The job is covered.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record. Browser extensions drop a timer into Asana and Jira, so you track from where you work. It's still a workspace you have to build first, with projects, tasks and rates before the reports say much.
Platforms and integrationsAWeb, Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, with links to Asana, Jira, ClickUp, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Notion and Linear. Google Calendar and Outlook start on Pro, and no Linux app is listed.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who TrackingTime is for

  • Fits if you have a large team and want a free timer with no seat limit
  • Works for agencies and consultancies that bill clients for hours and keep tasks in the same place

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you stay free and bill clients, because the Free plan can't mark hours billable or export CSV or Excel
  • Skip it if you need invoicing, rates, approvals or time off for nothing, since all start on Pro at $6.50 a user
  • Not for you if you're on Linux, as only Mac and Windows desktop apps are listed
  • Watch out: Google Calendar and Outlook links start on Pro, and SSO, audit logs and free client logins need Business at $10
  • Pricey if you pay monthly, at $6 on Starter and $8.50 on Pro instead of $4.50 and $6.50

Good to know

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of TrackingTime you could make: time tracking, reports, invoicing, tasks, kanban boards and Gantt & timelines. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 39 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade. It costs $54 a year.

What you could make

  • Time tracking, reports, invoicing, tasks, kanban boards and Gantt & timelines: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, Asana, Jira and ClickUp among them.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. TrackingTime’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
