Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What these tools do, how many we grade and what to know before choosing

11

online fax services we grade, from their own pages

Send and receive faxes from email, an app or a browser, with no fax machine or phone line.

Before you choose, here are 7 things to know about online fax services, worked out from every one we grade.

  1. 1

We grade 11 online fax services

1 of them are free or have a free plan, and 8 more let you try before paying. Everything in this guide comes from their own pages and our grades.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $9.15 a month in the middle

From $4.90 (Notifyre) to $25 (Documo), going by what each one's paid plans start at.

  3. 3

    Best value: Fax.Plus and Notifyre

Nothing on our chart scores higher than these without costing more.

  4. 4

5 of 11 have iPhone and Android apps

11 run in a web browser and 6 have a Windows app. Check the one you need before you fall for anything.

  5. 5

    The middle GPA is 2.4

1 score 3.0 or higher. The highest is Fax.Plus, at 3.0.

  6. 6

    Best free option: FaxBurner

FaxBurner has the highest GPA of the free ones, 2.4. iPhone fax app and email-to-fax service with a free temporary number.

  7. 7

11 worth keeping, 0 you could make

By our keep-or-make rules, 11 do something you couldn't reasonably build yourself, 0 are simple enough to make with an AI app builder, and 0 are a close call.

Part 02 · Top three

Our top three

The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits

The three online fax services we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.

  1. 1st

    3.0GPA

    Fax.Plus

    Free trial · from $6.99/mo

For: Most people who send and receive faxes

Fax.Plus sends and receives from any email inbox, a print menu, a browser and apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, with local, toll-free or ported numbers in 48 countries. Basic is $6.99 a month billed yearly ($8.99 monthly) for one number and 200 pages, and its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.7 from about 13,000 ratings. Know the limits: the free account sends 10 pages in total and cannot receive; Basic charges 10 cents a page over 200 and caps a fax at 60 pages; porting a US or Canadian number needs Premium at $13.99; and a signed HIPAA BAA, the API and Zapier need Enterprise at $79.99.

  2. 2nd

    2.2GPA

    Notifyre

    From $4.90/mo

For: Occasional senders, and offices that need a signed BAA

Notifyre charges 3 cents a page to send within the US from a prepaid wallet, with no subscription, and a fax number to receive on starts at $4.90 a month for 200 pages. It says every account is HIPAA compliant with a free BAA, and it adds email to fax, free number porting, audit trails and a fax API. It is second because there are no native apps, only an installable web app; there is nothing free to fax with and no trial; sending needs a $10 minimum top-up and is billed apart from receiving; and 3 cents applies only within the US, with high-quality sending 25% more.

    The Notifyre Insider’s Guide
  3. 3rd

    2.8GPA

    eFax

    Free trial · from $15.83/mo

For: Offices that want a BAA plus phone and Windows apps

eFax sends and receives by email on every plan, in a web portal, from a Windows print-to-fax app and from iPhone and Android apps that can sign a fax before sending, and it keeps past faxes in searchable storage. Business is $33.33 a month billed yearly for five users, 500 pages, pages to 51 countries and a signed BAA. It is third because Personal costs $15.83 a month billed yearly for 200 pages, more than twice Fax.Plus's Basic, and covers only the US and Canada with no BAA; there is no Mac app; extra users on Business are $10 a month; and the API is on Corporate, priced by sales.

Part 05 · Keep or make

Keep or make?

Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself

0

Simple enough to make yourself, of 11

Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where online fax services land, by the same rules for every tool.

  • 11

    Keep it

It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.

  • 0

    Your call

You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.

  • 0

    You could make this

What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.

Worth keeping

  • Fax.Plus

To replace Fax.Plus you would be making fax numbers connected to the phone network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • eFax

To replace eFax you would be making fax numbers connected to the phone network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • iFax

To replace iFax you would be making fax numbers connected to the phone network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • CocoFax

To replace CocoFax you would be making fax numbers connected to the phone network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
