How we grade them

Value for money
APro is $1.99 a month or $14.99 a year, well under what most paid reading apps charge. Or pay $39.99 once and keep it for life. The FAQ says there's no education discount or other offer, but at this price we wouldn't miss one.
BPro on Karakeep Cloud is $4 a month or $40 a year, about typical for a reading app. It holds 50,000 bookmarks and 50 GB, with AI tagging and full-text search, and comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee. Self-host it and you pay nothing.
Free plan and trial
BFree has most features, Quick Find and Quick Save included, and you can export your bookmarks. But it stops at 50 saved links in total, and 50 links goes fast.
BKarakeep Cloud's Free plan is a taster: 10 bookmarks and 20 MB, with AI tagging and full-text search listed under Pro. The real free version is the self-hosted one, with every feature and no caps, if you have a server to run it on.
Features
ANested tags, folders, Smart Lists that fill themselves, and Anydock, a floating bar of links on your Mac desktop. It archives a page as a PDF, web archive or screenshot, and keeps notes, images and files too. The Mac app even has a local MCP server for AI agents.
ALinks, notes, images and PDFs in one place, tagged and summarised for you. Search covers the full text, and OCR reads the words inside screenshots. There's a reader view with highlights, full-page archives, rules, RSS feeds saved automatically, and an API, CLI and MCP server.
Ease of use
A4.7 from 521 App Store ratings. Saving is a browser extension, the share menu or one shortcut, and iCloud does the syncing without a new account to make.
BThere's no App Store rating on record for it, so a B is as high as we go. On Karakeep Cloud you sign up and start saving, and the tagging is done for you. Hosting your own copy is a Docker job, which is a different afternoon.
Platforms and integrations
CMac, iPhone and iPad, with browser extensions and hooks into Raycast, Alfred, PopClip and Shortcuts. All Apple, though. The FAQ says there are no plans for a Windows or web version.
AWeb, iPhone and Android apps and browser extensions, with a REST API, webhooks, a command-line tool and a first-party MCP server. Self-hosted installs can run local models through Ollama.

Anybox

  • Apple platforms only: the FAQ says there are no plans for a Windows or web version.

Karakeep

Key features

Anybox

Native apps with iCloud sync
Anybox runs as native apps on iPhone, iPad and Mac and syncs through Apple's CloudKit. The vendor says no personal data is collected.
Quick Find and Quick Save
Quick Find is a Spotlight-like panel, opened with a global shortcut, that searches bookmarks offline and opens or shares them. Quick Save captures the current browser tab with its details.
Anydock
A floating, Dock-like bookmarks bar on the Mac desktop, also available as a menu bar icon. It holds 12 links on the free version and 30 on Pro.
Nested tags, folders and Smart Lists
Bookmarks are categorized with nested tags and folders, and Smart Lists gather them automatically by attributes such as URL and date added.
Archives and other data types
A bookmark can be archived as a PDF, a web archive or a screenshot, and notes, images and files can be saved alongside links.
Automation and MCP server
Siri Shortcuts, AppleScript and URL schemes automate saving and opening links, and the Mac app includes a local MCP server so AI agents can search and save items.

Karakeep

Links, notes, images and PDFs
Save links, text notes, images and PDFs from any device. For links, the title, description and preview image are fetched automatically.
AI tagging and summaries
A language model tags and summarizes what you save. Self-hosted installs can run local models through Ollama; on Karakeep Cloud, AI tagging is listed under Pro.
Full-text and semantic search
Search covers the full text of saved content in keyword, hybrid or semantic mode, and OCR makes the text inside images and screenshots searchable.
Reader view, highlights and archives
Articles open in a reader view where passages can be highlighted, the mobile apps keep content for offline reading, and full-page archives protect against link rot.
Rules, RSS feeds and shared lists
A rule engine tags or files new bookmarks by conditions such as the URL, subscribed RSS feeds are saved automatically, and a list can be shared with editors or viewers.
API, CLI and MCP server
A REST API with scoped keys, webhooks, a command-line tool and a first-party MCP server let scripts and AI assistants search and save bookmarks.
