Worth knowing
Google Slides
- There is no standalone paid Slides plan; the business version comes only as part of Google Workspace, with Gmail, Drive and Meet.
- Gemini in Slides is not in Business Starter; it starts at Business Standard, $14 per user / month on a 1-year commitment.
- Slides recording and speaker spotlight are not available with a free personal account; Google limits them to some Workspace plans.
- Google's help lists Slides for computer browsers, Android, iPhone and iPad; no Windows or Mac desktop app is listed.
Mentimeter
- The Free plan is capped at 50 participants a month, apart from one session a month with unlimited participants.
- Importing slides and exporting results need Basic or higher, and custom branding, a shared workspace and co-editing need Pro.
- Pro is sold on yearly billing only; just the Basic plan can be paid monthly, at €17.99 against €14 a month billed yearly.
- Prices are listed in euros, as the plans page displayed them, and exclude tax.
Key features
Google Slides
- Co-editing and revision history
- Several people can work on the same slide at the same time. Sharing settings control who can view, comment or edit, and revision history restores earlier versions.
- Gemini in Slides
- Generates new slides and images from a prompt, summarizes a presentation, rewrites text and can draw on files in Drive. It requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan.
- Slides recording
- Records a presenter talking through a deck and saves the video to Drive for sharing. Each recording is limited to 30 minutes and can only be made in Chrome or Edge.
- Presenting in Google Meet
- Slides and Meet controls appear in one place during a call, and speaker spotlight places the presenter's video inside the slide. Both are limited to some Workspace Business and Enterprise plans.
- PowerPoint and Canva files
- PowerPoint presentations can be edited directly without making a copy, or converted to Slides format. Canva presentations can also be imported.
- Offline editing
- Presentations can be opened, created and edited without a connection. On a computer this requires Chrome or Microsoft Edge with the Google Docs Offline extension.
Mentimeter
- Live polls and word clouds
- Participants join with a link or code and answer from their own device, with no account needed, and the results appear on screen as responses come in.
- Quizzes
- Quiz questions run as a competition: results from every quiz question in a presentation add up to one final winner. Ready-made quiz templates are included.
- Q&A
- The audience submits questions during a session. On Pro the presenter can moderate incoming questions and manage them from a phone with Mentimote.
- AI Menti Creator
- Menti AI drafts a full interactive presentation, suggests questions and groups live responses so that trends are easier to spot. It is included in the Free plan.
- Slide import and results export
- From the Basic plan, existing PowerPoint, Keynote or PDF slides can be uploaded and mixed with interactive questions, and results can be downloaded as Excel or PDF.
- Meeting and LMS integrations
- Mentimeter works inside PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams and Zoom, and in the Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and Brightspace learning systems with optional gradebook sync.
