Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 27 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade

TasksBoard is a web app that sits on top of Google Tasks. It shows each Google Tasks list as a column on a full-screen kanban board and adds things Google Tasks lacks, such as sharing a list with other people, colored labels and multiple boards. Tasks stay in the user's Google account, so changes also show up in Gmail, Google Calendar and the Google Tasks mobile apps.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about TasksBoard, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Sign in with the Google account you already have and your lists show up as columns, with nothing to set up.

The report card

Best for a kanban board on top of Google Tasks

TasksBoard turns your Google Tasks lists into a full-screen kanban board and lets you share a list with other people. But it only works with a Google account, there's no TasksBoard phone app, just Google's own, the free plan stops at 5 shared lists, and labels, extra boards and Sheets export need Pro at $3.99 a month billed yearly. Skip it if you don't use Google.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCPro is $3.99 a month billed yearly, or $4.99 monthly, which is exactly the middle of what this category charges rather than below it. It buys unlimited shared lists, multiple boards, color labels and export to Google Sheets. Students and educators get 50% off with a school email.
Free plan and trialBFree forever, with unlimited tasks and subtasks, the full-screen board, the Chrome extension and sync with Google Tasks, Gmail and Calendar, plus 5 shared lists. One person could really live on that, though labels, extra boards and Sheets export are Pro.
FeaturesDThis isn't a to-do app so much as a face for one. Every task is stored in Google Tasks and TasksBoard is a layer on top, so without a Google account it does nothing at all. What it adds is the board and list sharing; the rest is whatever Google Tasks can do.
Ease of useBSign in with the Google account you already have and your lists show up as columns, with nothing to set up. Collaborators do the same with theirs. There's no rating on record to go by, so it stops at a B.
Platforms and integrationsBA web app and a Chrome extension, wired into Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive and Sheets. There's no TasksBoard mobile app: the site's iOS and Android links lead to Google's own Google Tasks apps, where your tasks do still show up.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who TasksBoard is for

  • Fits if you already use Google Tasks and want a board in place of a narrow sidebar
  • Works for a family or small team that needs to share a Google Tasks list

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you don't use a Google account, because every task is stored in Google Tasks
  • Not for you if you want the board on your phone, as there's no TasksBoard mobile app
  • Tight if you're staying free and share a lot, since the free plan stops at 5 shared lists
  • Watch out: labels, extra boards, Sheets export and Drive attachments need Pro, which is $4.99 if you pay monthly
  • Pricey if you want shared boards, since those need Team at $4.99 a user a month billed yearly

Good to know

Good for

  • Google Tasks users who want a board view instead of a sidebar
  • Families and small teams who need to share Google Tasks lists
  • Google Workspace teams that want tasks to stay inside Google

Worth knowing

  • It works only with a Google account: every task is stored in Google Tasks, and TasksBoard is a layer on top of it.
  • There is no TasksBoard mobile app; the site's iOS and Android links lead to Google's own Google Tasks apps.
  • The free plan stops at 5 shared lists; labels, multiple boards, customization, Sheets export and Drive attachments need Pro.
  • Shared boards, team billing and priority support are limited to the Team plan.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

You could make this

A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.

What TasksBoard does at its core is tasks and kanban boards, and that is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well. You would give up 2 things, listed below, and little else. It costs $47.88 a year. An AI app builder starts at about $19 a month on our listings, and you only need it while you build.

What you could make

  • Tasks and kanban boards: an app builder makes these well.
  • It runs in a browser, which is where something home-made would run too.

What you could not

  • Several people working in it at the same moment.
  • It plugs into other products, Google Tasks, Gmail and Google Calendar among them.

What this rests on. TasksBoard’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
