How we grade them

Value for money
AIt's free and there's no paid tier to be nudged towards. Lists, My Day, reminders, steps, notes and shared lists all cost nothing.
BPro is $3.99 a month billed yearly, or $4.99 monthly, which is right at what paid to-do apps typically start at. It buys unlimited shared lists, multiple boards, color labels and export to Google Sheets. Students and educators get 50% off Pro with a school email.
Free plan and trial
AThe whole app is free with a personal Microsoft account or a work or school one. Even file attachments are in, up to 25MB on a task. Most people would never hit a wall.
AFree forever, with unlimited tasks and subtasks, the full-screen board, the Chrome extension and sync with Google Tasks, Gmail and Calendar. You also get 5 shared lists. A family or a small office could stay here for good.
Features
BLists, due dates, reminders, notes, steps inside a task and My Day for choosing today's work. Solid basics. But sharing is boxed in: a list can only be shared between personal Microsoft accounts, or between accounts in the same workplace or school.
BIt does one thing, putting a board and sharing on Google Tasks, and does it fully: drag tasks between columns, share a list with edit or view-only access, queue changes while offline. Pro adds labels and extra boards. Everything else is whatever Google Tasks can do.
Ease of use
A4.7 from about 268,000 App Store ratings. Sign in with the same account everywhere and your lists follow you. Unfinished tasks come back as suggestions the next day.
BSign in with the Google account you already have and your lists show up as columns. Collaborators do the same with theirs. There's no rating on record to go by, so it stops at a B.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android. Tasks also live in Outlook, Planner tasks show up here, Power Automate connects, and there's a public tasks API. No Linux app is listed.
BA web app and a Chrome extension, wired into Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive and Sheets. There's no TasksBoard mobile app: the site's iOS and Android links lead to Google's own Google Tasks apps, where your tasks do still show up.

Key features

Microsoft To Do

My Day
A daily list that resets every night. Tasks left unfinished go back to the Tasks list and appear among the next day's suggestions.
Lists, steps and notes
Tasks sit in lists and can have due dates, reminders, notes, a breakdown into steps and up to 25MB of attached files.
Shared lists
A list is shared by sending an invitation link, and it stays in sync as members make changes. Access can later be limited to current members or switched off.
Outlook and Planner
Tasks are stored in Exchange Online, so they show up in both To Do and Outlook Tasks. Flagged email can be handled as tasks, and Planner tasks can be seen in To Do.
Sync across devices
Signing in with the same account on each device keeps lists in step; the vendor says the app updates every 5 seconds.
Tasks API
Microsoft points developers to the public Outlook Tasks REST API for reading and updating the tasks that To Do stores.

TasksBoard

Full-screen kanban board
Each Google Tasks list becomes a column on a board that fills the browser window, and tasks are dragged between columns to reorder or reprioritize them.
Shared lists
A Google Tasks list can be shared with edit or view-only access, and collaborators sign in with their existing Google accounts. Free accounts can use up to 5 shared lists.
Labels and customization
Pro adds color-coded task labels that work across boards, highlight colors for individual lists and custom board backgrounds.
Multiple and shared boards
Pro users can keep separate boards for work, personal and side projects. The Team plan lets a whole board be shared so every member sees the same lists.
Google Workspace connections
Tasks with dates appear in Google Calendar, a Gmail add-on turns emails into tasks, Drive files can be attached on Pro, and lists can be exported to Google Sheets on Pro.
Sync through Google Tasks
Changes sync in real time with Google Tasks, so they appear in Gmail, Google Calendar and Google's mobile apps. Changes made while offline are queued until the connection returns.
