UPDF
PDF editor with AI chat, one license across desktop and mobile
Our verdict
Second of our top three PDF editors
For: People who want a paid editor on computer and phone
UPDF edits text and images, converts to Office and PDF/A, runs OCR in 38 languages, builds forms, redacts, compares two PDFs and adds Bates numbers in batches, and one license covers Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, synced through UPDF Cloud. On the US App Store it is $49.99 a year or $79.99 once; updf.com's prices could not be read and may differ. It is second because PDFgear does the everyday jobs for nothing: UPDF's free version allows 2 conversions a day and watermarks saved changes, the AI assistant is a separate subscription, there is no browser version, and the Mac App Store edition leaves out OCR.

Best for one cheap license for computer and phone
UPDF is a desktop and mobile app for Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, and one license covers all of them. It edits text, OCRs, redacts and compares, for $49.99 a year or $79.99 once on the US App Store. The free version watermarks what you save, though, and the AI is a separate subscription.
Who UPDF is for
- Great if you edit on a laptop and a phone and want one license for both
- Handy when you'd rather pay once than rent your PDF editor
- A treat if you summarize and translate long PDFs and pay for the AI
Who UPDF is not for
- Skip it if you need a browser version, as there isn't one
- Not for you if you want the AI on the one-time license, as it's sold separately
- Tight if you stay on the free version, with 2 conversions a day and a watermark
Why UPDF gets a 3.0
Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.
- AValue for money$49.99 a year on the US App Store, among the cheapest paid editors here, and one license covers every platform. The $79.99 perpetual license, spread over three years, is cheaper still, though the AI isn't in it and updf.com may charge differently.
- CFree plan and trialThere's a free version, but it's 2 conversions a day, AI on 5 files and a watermark on anything you save. Fine for a look around, not for real work.
- BFeaturesEdits text and images, converts to Office and PDF/A, OCRs in 38 languages, builds forms, redacts, compares and batch-processes, with Bates numbers. It covers the whole job. The Mac App Store edition leaves out OCR; the updf.com download has it.
- BEase of useNo store rating on record. It's an app you install and start editing in, with nothing to set up first.
- BPlatforms and integrationsWindows, Mac, iPhone and Android, synced through UPDF Cloud, plus Dropbox. No browser version and a short integration list, so it stops at B.

The plain part of UPDF you could make: forms. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 13 of the 15 other PDF editors we grade. It costs $49.99 a year.
What you could make
- Forms: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Editing the text inside a PDF without breaking its layout.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. UPDF’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
