Best for Windows offices that want an Office-style PDF editor

Nitro PDF Pro is a desktop app for Windows and Mac, with an iPhone app and a browser workspace for viewing and review. It edits, converts and OCRs, has AI built in, and gives whoever buys the licenses a proper admin console. But at $180 a year with no monthly option, it's one of the dearest editors here, and signing is a separate product.

Who Nitro PDF Pro is for

  • Great if your office lives in Microsoft 365 and wants a PDF editor that feels the same
  • Handy when one person manages licenses for a whole team from a console
  • Good for Windows buyers happy to pay once for three years with Classic

Who Nitro PDF Pro is not for

  • Pricey if you're one person, at $180 a year with no monthly plan
  • Skip it if you send documents for signature, as that's Nitro Sign, sold separately
  • Not for you if you're on Android, as there's no app

Why Nitro PDF Pro gets a 2.2

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • DValue for moneyStandard is $15 a user a month, billed as $180 a year, with no monthly option. That's the dearest end of PDF editors. Classic is $270 once for three years on Windows, which spread over its term is middling, but it's the core tools only.
  • CFree plan and trialNo free plan, but a 14-day trial with no credit card needed. Enough to see if it fits, then you pay.
  • CFeaturesCreates, converts, edits and OCRs PDFs, with AI that summarizes, translates and pulls tables into Excel, plus Office add-ins. But sending for signature is Nitro Sign, a separate product, and no form builder or redaction is on record.
  • BEase of useNo store rating on record. It's a desktop editor you install and start using, with an Office-style ribbon on Windows that'll feel familiar to anyone who lives in Word.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsWindows, Mac, iPhone and the web, with Word, Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox and Box. No Android app, which keeps it off the top grade.

Keep Nitro PDF Pro, or make your own?

Keep it

The plain part of Nitro PDF Pro you could make: documents. What surrounds it you could not. The 6 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 11 of the 15 other PDF editors grade higher. It costs $180 a year.

What you could make

  • Documents: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • Editing the text inside a PDF without breaking its layout.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook and SharePoint among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.

What this rests on. Nitro PDF Pro’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
