Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 12 of the 15 other remote desktop apps we grade

Zoho Assist is remote support software from Zoho, mainly for IT and help desk support of other people's computers. It is sold as two lines: Remote Support, priced per technician for on-demand sessions with customers, and Unattended Access, priced per 25 computers for machines you manage without anyone present. A free plan covers one technician and five unattended computers on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Zoho Assist, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Customers join from an invitation, so there's little to set up on their side.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for remote support for small help desks

The catch is that support sessions and unattended computers are sold separately, so many teams pay twice.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $10 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $10 per technician / month, billed annually ($12 billed monthly).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

1 remote support technician, 5 unattended computers and 1 concurrent session, with no limit on session length. File transfer, screen blanking and reboot-and-reconnect need a paid plan.

  4. 4

    It runs on 6 platforms

Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    On-demand remote support

Start a session with a customer's computer through an invitation, with chat, voice and video chat, file transfer, and session transfer to another technician.

  6. 6

    Unattended access

Deploy the agent to many computers at once, group them, set permissions and reach them without anyone present, including Wake-on-LAN and power options.

  7. 7

    Help desk integrations

Start sessions from tickets in Zendesk, ServiceNow, Freshservice, Freshdesk and Jira, with webhooks and Zapier on higher plans.

  8. 8

    A 3.0 GPA, above 12 of 15

That is against the other remote desktop apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace Zoho Assist you would be making a fast, secure link to another computer through any network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for remote support for small help desks

Zoho Assist is a solid help desk tool with a free plan a one-person IT shop could live on: one technician, five unattended computers, no time limit. Paid plans start at $10 per technician a month billed annually. The catch is that support sessions and unattended computers are sold separately, so many teams pay twice.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCRemote Support Standard is $10 per technician a month billed annually, and unattended computers are a separate $10 per 25, so a technician doing both pays $20. For the same job that's below ScreenConnect, TeamViewer and LogMeIn Resolve, but above Getscreen.me.
Free plan and trialBA free plan you can actually use: 1 technician, 5 unattended computers and no limit on session length, for personal or small business use. It's one session at a time, and file transfer and screen blanking need paying. Paid plans have a 15-day trial with no card.
FeaturesBOn-demand sessions with chat, voice and video, unattended access with bulk deployment and Wake-on-LAN, recording, branding, a customer widget and Zia AI. Nothing in the listing is missing from the job; recording and remote printing just aren't in Standard.
Ease of useB4.73 from 909 App Store ratings, a fine score that misses our A only on the number of ratings. Customers join from an invitation, so there's little to set up on their side.
Platforms and integrationsAWeb, Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, starting sessions from Zendesk, ServiceNow, Freshservice, Freshdesk and Jira tickets, with webhooks and Zapier on higher plans.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Zoho Assist is for

  • Great if you're a one-person IT shop looking after a handful of machines for free
  • Handy when support requests already arrive as Zendesk, Freshdesk or Jira tickets
  • Good for teams that want their own branding on support sessions

Who it is not for

  • Pricey if you need both support and unattended access, as each is a separate plan
  • Tight if you stay free and need file transfer, which needs a paid plan
  • Skip it if session recording is a must on a budget, as it isn't in the Standard plans

Good to know

Good for

  • Customer support teams helping users over the phone or chat
  • IT teams managing a fleet of office computers without anyone present
  • Small businesses that need one technician and a few machines at no cost
  • Teams already working in Zendesk, Freshservice or Jira

Worth knowing

  • Remote Support and Unattended Access are sold separately, one per technician and one per 25 computers, so many teams need both.
  • The free plan allows one concurrent session and leaves out file transfer and screen blanking.
  • A session-based Corporate plan lists $75 a month for 50 technicians, 2 concurrent sessions and 1,000 managed devices; larger concurrent plans are quoted.
  • Session recording and remote printing are not in the Standard plans.

Where it stands

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

12/15

Other remote desktop apps it is graded above

Zoho Assist's GPA of 3.0 is higher than 12 of the 15 other remote desktop apps we grade, and level with 1.

It stands best on platforms and integrations (A, above 13 of 15) and worst on value for money (C, above 2).

Its paid plans start at $10 a month, against a middle price of $10 for the category: 5 of the 10 others that charge start lower.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 3.3 out of 4. Nothing scores higher for less, though at least one tool matches that score at a lower price.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Zoho Assist you would be making a fast, secure link to another computer through any network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 12 of the 15 other remote desktop apps we grade. It costs $120 a year.

What you could not

  • A fast, secure link to another computer through any network.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Zendesk, ServiceNow and Freshservice among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • Hooks into the device itself: widgets.
  • What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Zoho Assist’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
