Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What these tools do, how many we grade and what to know before choosing

37

read-later and bookmark apps we grade, from their own pages

Save articles, bookmarks and feeds, and keep what you highlight.

Before you choose, here are 7 things to know about read-later and bookmark apps, worked out from every one we grade.

  1. 1

We grade 37 read-later and bookmark apps

31 of them are free or have a free plan, and 4 more let you try before paying. Everything in this guide comes from their own pages and our grades.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $3 a month in the middle

From $1.03 (wallabag) to $12.50 (Glasp), going by what each one's paid plans start at.

  3. 3

Best value: Readwise, Cubox, Raindrop.io and Flipboard

Nothing on our chart scores higher than these without costing more.

  4. 4

17 of 37 have iPhone and Android apps

27 run in a web browser and 5 have a Windows app. Check the one you need before you fall for anything.

  5. 5

    The middle GPA is 2.8

15 score 3.0 or higher. The highest is FeedFlow, at 3.2.

  6. 6

    Best free option: FeedFlow

FeedFlow has the highest GPA of the free ones, 3.2. Free, open-source RSS reader for mobile and desktop.

  7. 7

31 worth keeping, 0 you could make

By our keep-or-make rules, 31 do something you couldn't reasonably build yourself, 0 are simple enough to make with an AI app builder, and 6 are a close call.

Part 02 · Top three

Our top three

The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits

The three read-later and bookmark apps we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.

  1. 1st

    3.2GPA

    Raindrop.io

    Free plan · from $28/yr

For: Most people, for links, articles and highlights in one library

Raindrop.io keeps links, articles, uploaded files and highlights in collections with tags, and syncs them across the web, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and browser extensions. The free plan has unlimited bookmarks, collections, highlights and devices, with sharing and collaboration included, and Pro is $28 a year or $3 a month. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.5 from about 400 ratings. Know the limits: full-text search, permanent copies of saved pages, reminders and the AI assistant need Pro, as do notes on highlights. Free accounts can upload 100 MB of files a month, and desktop apps are listed for Mac and Windows only.

  2. 2nd

    3.0GPA

    Instapaper

    Free plan · from $5.99/mo

For: People who save long articles to read later

Instapaper saves an article and reformats it into an uncluttered text view, and its iPhone and Android apps download unread articles to read offline. Saved items sync across the web, iPhone, iPad and Android, and Kobo eReaders link to an account directly. The free plan has unlimited saves, and its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.6 from about 3,500 ratings. It is second because it is a reading queue more than a library for every link, and its paid plan costs more than Raindrop.io's: full-text search, the PDF reader, the permanent archive and unlimited notes need Premium at $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Free accounts get 5 notes a month and see ads on the Instapaper website.

    3.0GPA

    Inoreader

    Free plan · from $7.50/mo

For: People who follow feeds and want new posts brought to them

Inoreader is a feed reader: it brings RSS feeds and, on Pro, newsletters, YouTube subscriptions and public social feeds into one place, in a browser and in iPhone and Android apps. The free plan covers 150 RSS feeds with folders, tags, search in your feeds and a read-later list, without ads, and its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.7 from about 4,400 ratings. It is third because following feeds is a different habit from saving pages, and its paid plan costs more than the two above: rules, filters, offline reading, highlights and notes need Pro at $7.50 a month, billed annually, or $9.99 billed monthly. No desktop app is listed, and Pro caps newsletter feeds at 20.

Part 05 · Keep or make

Keep or make?

Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself

0

Simple enough to make yourself, of 37

Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where read-later and bookmark apps land, by the same rules for every tool.

  • 31

    Keep it

It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.

  • 6

    Your call

You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.

  • 0

    You could make this

What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.

Worth keeping

  • FeedFlow

FeedFlow is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

  • Flipboard

Flipboard is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

  • Raindrop.io

The plain part of Raindrop.io you could make: bookmarks, highlights and read later. What surrounds it you could not. The 6 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

  • wallabag

The plain part of wallabag you could make: read later and highlights. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
