3.0GPA

Very good · out of 4.0 · graded Oct 23, 2026

Best for checking a page's heading order

HeadingsMap builds a clickable outline of a page's headings, sections and landmarks and marks where the levels break, free on Chrome and Firefox. That's all it checks: titles, meta tags, links and schema need another extension, and the store says EU consumer rights don't apply because the developer hasn't identified itself as a trader.

Who HeadingsMap is for

  • Fits if you check that a page's headings run in order before publishing
  • Works for accessibility reviews of heading and landmark structure

Who HeadingsMap is not for

  • Too light for on-page SEO checks, as titles, meta tags, links and schema need another extension
  • Skip it if you browse in Safari or Edge, as no store listing for either is named
  • Watch out: the developer hasn't identified itself as a trader, so EU consumer rights don't apply

Why HeadingsMap gets a 3.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for moneyFree from the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons, with no account and no paid version listed.
  • AFree plan and trialFree outright: every view in the extension, with nothing held back.
  • DFeaturesOne narrow function: headings, sections and landmarks, skipped levels marked, click to jump, frames read and hidden headings left out. Titles, meta tags, links and schema need another extension, as the listing says.
  • BEase of useNo rating on record, but nothing to set up: click the icon and the outline appears beside the page.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsChrome and Firefox, including Firefox for Android, so it reaches a phone as well as a computer. No Safari or Edge listing is named, and there are no integrations.

Keep HeadingsMap, or make your own?

Keep it

HeadingsMap is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

What you could not

  • A crawler that checks every page of a site.
  • A score built from what the top results for each keyword cover.

What this rests on. HeadingsMap’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

What is HeadingsMap?

HeadingsMap is a free browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that builds a clickable outline of a page from its headings, sections and landmarks. It marks where the heading levels break the hierarchy, which matters both for SEO and for screen-reader users, and clicking an item scrolls to it on the page. It is made by an independent developer, Jorge Rumoroso.

Worth knowing

  • It checks headings, sections and landmarks only; titles, meta tags, links and schema need another extension.
  • It is listed for Chrome and Firefox, including Firefox for Android; no Safari or Edge store listing is named.
  • The Chrome Web Store notes the developer has not identified itself as a trader, so EU consumer rights do not apply.

Key features

Heading outline
Lists every heading with its level and, optionally, marks where a level is skipped or out of order.
Sections and landmarks
Also lists HTML sections and page landmarks, with optional notes on structural errors in each.
Click to jump
Clicking an item scrolls the page to that heading and outlines it, so long pages can be checked or read quickly.
Frames and live pages
Reads documents inside frames through a document selector, and refreshes the outline when the page changes.
Copyable anchor links
When a heading has an anchor, the outline links to it, and an optional link copies that address to the clipboard.
Hidden headings left out
Headings hidden from assistive technologies are not shown, so the outline matches what screen readers announce.
