3.0GPA

Very good · out of 4.0 · graded Oct 23, 2026

Best for a toolbar of page inspection tools

Web Developer adds a toolbar of page tools, alt and title attributes, broken images, element outlines, live CSS editing, cookies, forms and links to HTML and accessibility validators, free on Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera. It's a general developer toolbox with no search or ranking data, the Opera version dates from 2017, and the latest release, 3.0.1, is from June 2024.

Who Web Developer is for

  • Fits if you check alt text, hidden elements and markup by hand
  • Works for people who switch between Firefox, Edge and Chrome and want the same tools in each

Who Web Developer is not for

  • Not for you if you want search, ranking or backlink data, as it has none
  • Watch out: the latest release is 3.0.1 from June 2024, built in the developer's spare time with no release dates
  • Skip it if you're on Opera, where the version is 0.2.2 from February 2017
  • Tight if you're on Firefox, which lacks the disable features, Display Style Information and the context menu

Why Web Developer gets a 3.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for moneyFree and open source in the Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera stores; the developer asks for optional donations.
  • AFree plan and trialFree outright: every tool, on all four browsers, with nothing held back.
  • CFeaturesAlt and title attributes, broken images, element outlines, hidden elements, live CSS, cookies, forms, rulers, responsive previews and validator links. A large toolbox, but only part of it is SEO, and there's no search or ranking data.
  • BEase of useNo rating on record, but nothing to set up: click the toolbar button and pick a tool from the menu.
  • CPlatforms and integrationsChrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera on Windows, macOS and Linux, but computers only, with no integrations.

Keep Web Developer, or make your own?

Keep it

Web Developer is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

What you could not

  • A crawler that checks every page of a site.

What this rests on. Web Developer’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

What is Web Developer?

Web Developer is a free, open-source browser extension by Chris Pederick that adds a toolbar button full of tools for inspecting and changing the page you are viewing. It can outline elements, show alt and title attributes, find broken images, edit CSS live, view cookies and forms, and send a page to HTML and accessibility validators. It is available for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera.

Worth knowing

  • The latest release, 3.0.1, dates from June 2024; the developer works on it in spare time and gives no release dates.
  • The Opera version is much older, version 0.2.2 from February 2017.
  • The Firefox version lacks the disable features, Display Style Information and the context menu, because Firefox removed the APIs.
  • It is a general web developer toolbox, with no search or ranking data; its SEO uses are page-level checks.

Key features

Image and attribute checks
Display alt attributes, image dimensions and title attributes on the page, replace images with their alt text, and find broken images.
